WJOX calls move to 94.5, 100.5 is now WWMM

It's finally official. The WYSF calls are no more, at least in Birmingham. According to the FCC website, the WJOX calls have now moved to 94.5 as of yesterday, and 100.5 has new calls of WWMM. Could WWMM stand for "Warm"...maybe some type of AC format on the horizon for 100.5?

8)I sure hope it's oldies, we need a good oldies station. If not oldies, I bet it's going to be an adult contemporary type station.

The 'MM' part is clearly a reference to Mickey Mouse. Radio Disney returns to Birmingham! :D

I just found this on "the other radio board" (I guess I can't say the name of that board on here. It must still be a "bad word" because when I typed it in and previewed it, the text reads "www.radio-info.com" instead of the name of the board, so I suppose that means it's still inappropriate, lol). Anyway, according to that "other board", Citadel registered 1005thevibe.com on July 25, and the folks there were speculating that maybe 100.5 might go with a rhythmic CHR or urban format to compete with Cox's JAMZ. Is that what Citadel is up to, or is it all just a big smokescreen? I'm not seeing how the call letters WWMM spell out "Vibe" in any sort of way :), so why choose those letters for 100.5 if the station is going to be known as "Vibe"? Unless they're just parking those WWMM call letters on 100.5 to be used on another one of the other Citadel stations. Here's the link to the story...maybe... if it lets me post it. If not, you probably know where to find it.
"Talk Amongst Yourselves" :D

LOL...I guess that won't work either. :D

100.5 could still be "The Vibe", but just not have corresponding call letters. Few [music] stations try to brand themselves using them, so 'WWMM' could just a replacement for the no longer available 'WJOX'.

That's true, but if it doesn't matter what calls 100.5 uses, why not just move the WYSF call letters over to 100.5 when JOX moved to 94.5? All that would involve would be just a swap of call letters between the two stations. But since 100.5 has to choose new calls (due to the WJOX calls going to 94.5), why not select ones for 100.5 that are more reflective of the pending format, than ones just being "pulled out of a hat" at random? Only reasons I can see for the selection of those calls would be either to park them there temporarily for another station Citadel wants to use them on (eventually swapping them and placing other calls on 100.5 which spell out "Vibe" in some sort of fashion), or if Citadel is just using the WWMM calls on there as a stopgap "behind the scenes" measure to conceal information about what the new format will be. And, of course, the third possibility being that the WWMM calls were selected for another format besides rhythmic CHR or urban, and all this about 1005TheVibe.com is some sort of smoke screen.

btw, that's pretty funny about "MM" standing for Mickey Mouse...I didn't even see that connection with it being Citadel/ABC, LOL.

Maybe they think the WYSF calls are too familiar with the audience as an unpopular radio station. Maybe they think the calls are jinxed. Maybe they want to just start clean with new calls, new station, new format all around. Calls don't always match what the station is called. There are TONS of examples of stations where the calls have nothing to do with the name of the station. Aside from the call letter change, lets get back to the format discussion. If they were to flip to a CHR/Rhythmic or Urban type format, why do they think it would beat the station with a much stronger signal in Birmingham, 95.7 Jamz? Why put it on the weaker signal and compete with stronger signal competition? Will Citadel try moving 100.5 into Birmingham and dropping the power like 95.7 did? Then again, the urban audience in Birmingham may be so tired of 95-7 Jamz that they might listen to it more even if it is a weaker signal.

I'm curious as to why no one has mentioned HOT 107.7, also Citadel-owned? Perhaps this is for a Citadel property somewhere else?

Citadel has no format targeting suburban women right now. Then again, they probably wouldn't put it on 100.5.

100.5 would seem just about the right place to put a second urban (to partner with Hot 107.7) or a station that's intended to pull numbers from another competitor in another demo (a flanker?).

So let me get this straight. WJOX sports talk format goes from 690AM to 100.5FM directly ending WRAX's existence for good. Then it jumps again this time to 94.5FM putting an end to another station's existence (WYSF) all within a span of less than 2 years.

I'm glad this doesn't happen very often in the Huntsville market, although the rock stations needs some shaking up, imo.

I just wonder if anybody knows when the last day WJOX will be at 100.5. I can't wait to see what the new station will be at WWMM. :)

Citadel said that that 94.5 would rebroadcast JOX for a couple of weeks. It's been two weeks today since JOX permanently moved to 94.5, so the format switch at 100.5 could be today, but I imagine that "two week period" could possibly be longer than two weeks. Could be today or sometime later in the week. Or maybe longer. It's anybody's guess.

One thing I've been pondering, though...will Citadel change their plans regarding the Reg's Coffee House show? If Citadel picks some type of format that's entirely incongruous with Reg's Coffee House, will they still offer the show on 100.5? Seems like to me it would make more sense to put that show on WZRR. I wonder if the show will eventually land up there, as that's the only other Birmingham Citadel FM left in the mix, and the show being on 100.5 is just a temporary measure.

I think you may be right Nate I don't see 100.5 if it went urban beating JAMZ . But I do know both JAMZ and

Kiss bank some serious money. I would think Citadel wouldn't really try to beat JAMZ number wise they want to

cut into cox's pocket.

And what's that Citadel stock trading at nowadays? 85, 95 cents? Guess whatever format they pick, it'll be on the cheap. I hear Farid is on the cost-cutting warpath lately. He just nixed Opie and Anthony off their Buffalo and Grand Rapids stations, letting the PDs take over mornings. Said the little birdie, "cheep cheep!" :D

The b-b-boys didn't seem as upset to lose those two markets as they were over their stock losses - they bought when it was up around $16. ::)
