What a strange article. Something about all of this just doesn't add up.
1. The team quit without their digital platform already in place....why?
2. They didn't want to burn any bridges with the station so they kept stressing in their quotes how much they appreciated the station they just quit at. In fact they stress it so much, it is about all the article talks about. You quit! No one cares!
3. No one at the station would respond to the reporter but the operations manager put out a tweet about himself and the people who just quit celebrating their relationship. How weird. The press release about the exit was from the members of the show, the station was oddly silent.
4. The station offered to let them do farewell shows (probably to buy time to determine replacements)...but they didn't, so to their audience the Roundtable just "disappeared". Doesn't sound like they appreciated the station as much as they want us to think. It also sounds like they caught the station without a fall-back plan.
5. The ratings of the station are at their lowest level in many many years despite having NO local competition. How do you lose audience in a one-format race with three signals under your control in the format?
6. The station claims on the air to be a national leader, but doesn't show up on any ratings rankers for the format. In Birmingham, Jox is a one season (fall only) station. The rest of the year their ratings are tiny. Their on-air talent changes over the last several years have not improved their ratings and now they have lost a popular show and probably a LOT of ad dollars. How did Jox lose so much ratings momentum while Bama is winning national championships, Auburn has a new coach, and UAB is creating new excitement. Where did all their listeners go, to their smartphones?
7. Is this a sign that broadcast radio in Birmingham is in trouble in a digital world? Was this a smart move or a dumb move for the Roundtable guys?
This will be interesting to watch. Both the station and the Roundtable boys have to make some really big moves quickly to survive.
Who will be the long-term winner?
