WJOX, WSPZ to split into two stations

I'm really surprised that WSPZ didn't become a full-time ESPN radio affiliate. At least they're going to have two hours of "The Jungle".

Wonder what WERC will do if Finebaum moves down Valley Avenue to WJOX?

What's the point of having two sports stations in a market that's barely in the Arbitron Top 50? Something doesn't make sense here.

No kidding. This is DUMB. Seriously.

I understand the idea of having one ESPN affiliate and one Fox affiliate. But is that really necessary, with so much local programming on both stations? I dunno about this...

What's the logic behind having two local AM drive and afternoon shows competing with each other in the same niche format in a market where we don't exactly have a bunch of pro teams to talk about 24/7? At least the AM will have Cowherd and Rome.

Is there ANY possibility -- even the smallest chance -- that this is some way of stunting on one of the stations?

So, looks like citadel is pulling a cox. Is this the new thing these days? don't bother competing with the other guys, just the station down the hall

Aren't there several markets that are roughly the same size (or even smaller, like Jackson, Mississippi or Huntsville) that have two sports talk stations? As crazy as this area is about sports, I'm surprised that it's taken this long for another sports talk station to be launched. I'm just surprised that Citadel created a station to compete with itself.

In Cox's case it makes a little more sense because there is another Country giant in the market. I am not sure what the logic is behind Citadel's sports duo. Perhaps there were rumblings that someone was going to put another Sports station on in the market.

Also, can someone give me the lineup for 100.5?

I would guess the move has to do with the fact that Citadel has the rights to both Alabama and Auburn broadcasts... as well as the Atlanta Braves and Tennessee Titans. Having two signals creates a LOT of opportunities to clear all the related programming BS that's required to get those contracts these days. Bet money you'll see the AM becaome the "dumping ground" for programming they have to clear without having to pre-empt the talk shows they're paying big bucks for (re: Finebaum)

Maybe this means that WAPI will be able to focus on being a news/talk station and no longer be the dumping grounds for other sports related things that were promised to air.

When it comes to some of that stuff though WJOX completely mismanaged their programming. Exiling the World Series to WAPI? Dumping Hey Coach on Rock 99.5? And they did it all why? So they could air Southern Sports Tonight.
