There are few, if any long-term contracts any more, and as we saw with Krenn, they aren't necessarily a guarantee of employment.
Having said that, I see no reason the station would want to part with a popular personality who does more than just her airshift. In CC's world, the most common reason for that to happen would be that the budget dictated that a position be eliminated or staffed by someone who costs less.

SVD has been there since March of 1990, so she really is a rarity in this day and age. But then again, look what happened to Jim Merkel. He had over 30 years service, many with 3WS, and all of a sudden, one morning, he 's gone. All it takes is one person in the corporate offices who has some dislike for you or your work, and out the door you go, not just in radio, but in any job nowadays.

I'm sure Merkel's departure was only about money. CC has decided that morning shows don't matter anymore in adult-oriented music formats, so they are on a corporate drive to spend less in that daypart.

One full-market signal would probably do quite well, especially considering that we're talking in Keymarket's case about stations licensed to Ellwood City (92.1, blocked out in Pittsburgh by Pitt's WPTS) and Uniontown (99.3). Really makes you wonder why they don't either flip 92.1 with Froggy 103.5, or at least flip their 105.5 translator above 279 to a Pickle simulcast.
What's wrong with the name Pickle in the area of Heinz Foods? Perfect for the area.
Outside of the morning show, Pickle relies on satellite-delivered programming from Dial Global's "Classic Hits". Not much to crow about.
I worked for WJPA for two years as a weekend newscaster. The community support that radio station has is nothing short of amazing. But much of it has to do with the fact that a lot of its investors are people who still own Main Street businesses in the area, and JPA donates a lot of airtime to community events, and its staff are involved in many community organizations as well.
I was proud to be a part of that station...my only reason for leaving was because I wanted to go somewhere that had more potential for me to advance. I have no complaints.

I'm not sure it's the transmitter so much...they've got a hands-on full-time engineering staff and they maintain equipment VERY well. Props to George, Cliff and Bob.

I love their station. Have been listening to it since I was a kid (early 60's). I live so close to their tower that I had to order a special filter to install on my outdoor antenna line-in to lessen the effect this station has on my ability to listen to 93.7, 94.5 and 96.1! That being said, when I am in my GM car the station goes in and out of stereo constantly. Its been doing this for at least a year now. It's annoying. The reason I mention "GM" is because I don't notice this on my home stereo(s). Not being an engineer, I have no idea why this is. I thought maybe it was my car radio, so when I was in my friends car I noticed the same thing. He noticed it too --- after I pointed it out to him. He does not listen to JPA', so he wasn't aware of the problem. FYI, they are both newer model GM's, mine a 2009 Traverse and his a 2011 Acadia. I wish they could fix the problem, that way I could enjoy their station even more!!! Maybe George, Cliff or Bob want to drop me an e-mail and we could get together so they could hear it for themselves.

It's the automatic blend circuit in the radio causing this. When the signal gets weak the radio blends the signal to mono. Most car radios from the last 15 or so years do this. Short of taking the radio apart and removing the circuit there is no fix for this problem.
Pretty much every GM car I owned did that. One was a 1983 Oldsmobile Firenza and the other was a 1993 Chevrolet Cavalier. Both those digital tuners would go mono when getting at least 30 miles from a major city. With the Pa. hills probably sooner. Never seemed to have that issue in a Chrysler product.
Sounds feasable, but it's not a result of a weak signal. I can literally be underneath their transmitter and it still does it. Really, I tried it last nite and I was on Berry Road (where their transmitter is located) and it did it over and over again. NO other station does this on my radio. Thanks.

I always enjoyed WKWK when my school took trips to Oglebay Park. That was a good station. WJPA still has the power to amaze, AM or FM.
