WJRZ & it's 107.9 Translator

Tom McNally said:
WJRZ isn't the primary.
The main station is WRAT, then WJLK, WOBM-FM and WJRZ on FM (in that order),
and WADB and WOBM (AM) and Marine Channel 16 ... the reason for WRAT is it's
farther away.

In South Jersey, for Salem/Hope Creek Nuke Plant, it's WENJ-FM 97.3 and WJKS, 101.7 ...

Good luck trying to get WRAT (or WJLK once WIBG-FM powers up) in Barnegat, Stafford, Eagleswood or Southern LBI. All of them are within the 10 mile evacuation zone...

aren't the translators also in TR and manahawkin in case of an emergency at oyster creek that could potentially knock 100.1 off the air? the main transmitter is literally next to the power plant.

The main transmitter is not next to the power plant; it's south of there by a few miles. The transmitter is in Waretown, and Oyster Creek is in Forked River. The main purpose for the translators, I was told, was to provide LBI and sections of downtown Toms River with an opportunity to actually hear the station.

But 100.1 never has signal issues on LBI, even mid-summer. In fact 100.1 is much more reliable than 107.9 which gets destroyed by WRNB, WFSI and WEBE during summer tropo.

But if a natural disaster should happen and 100.1 is knocked off the air, 107.9 is there for LBI coverage as well as the COL.

so what's with all the signs then in ocean county including the one on 72 about tuning to 92.7 and not something else if you hear sirens and see the flashing lights?

I wonder if they could have just skipped the expense of an STL and fed WJRZ 100.1 with the translator.

Two things - 1, WJRZ broadcasts in HD, and relaying a analog FM signal would defeat the purpose of having HD. #2, someone who felt like being a bit nefarious could rig up a pirate TX, set it to 107.9, and park in Waretown and "take over" WJRZ.

They could do the same thing from Wegman's parking lot in Oakhurst with W244AS on 96.7
