WJXT as a CBS affiliate.

Why did WJXT channel 4 in Jacksonville lose the CBS affiliation? I wish WJXT was still a CBS affiliate today for two reasons. One: It was considered to be one of the most loyal CBS charter affiliates, and two: I did not want WAWS channel getting the UPN affiliation when CBS moved to WTEV channel 47. I did not want WAWS to get any more Disney shows, they already had the Disney Afternoon from 1988-1997 and Disney's One Too from 1999-2003 were on UPN affiliates. I wanted the Disney Afternoon on WNFT/WTEV 47 because not only it aired the Mario cartoons it would have had the Disney Afternoon commercial bumpers instead of the individual show bumpers for the Disney cartoon shows. So why did WJXT lose the CBS affiliation and why couldn't the UPN affiliation go to another station in Jacksonville?

In 2002, WJXT dropped CBS, as the station's owners, Post-Newsweek, refused to agree to CBS's demands to renew its affiliation, which included carrying all CBS shows in pattern and paying CBS for the privilege to carry them ("reverse compensation"), leading to WJXT dropping its longtime affiliation with CBS and going indy. CBS would find a home at Jax's UPN affiliate, WTEV, with UPN moving to sister station WAWS, delayed to 11PM due to Fox programming.

Alan Frank, Post-Newsweek's head of the broadcast division, stated in October 2001 that CBS's demands were unreasonable given WJXT's market dominance. At the time, the station was consistently a top 5 performer among all CBS affiliates and Channel 4 Eyewitness News left everyone else in the dust in local news ratings. Frank was gutsy and didn't renew the agreement. I've always liked his stance even though WJXT didn't get to capitalize on the strong CBS prime line-up of the last decade.

I remember as a corollary to all that that WJXT's management didn't like
CBS's sports coverage (especially football and golf) running over into
"Eyewitness News"'s timeslot; IIRC, it was a pretty strong lead-in to
"60 Minutes" on Sunday.

I have heard at various times that ABC has approached WJXT about
an affiliation but been turned down.

I still find it rather strange that Post-Newsweek didn't do the same thing either with WKMG down the road in Orlando.

Wasn't ABC in Brunswick, GA for that DMA some years ago? Channel 21, I think?

It was a satellite of and co-owned with WJXX-25 when Albritton owned them. I don't recall what happened to Brunswick stick after they sold WJXX to Gannett, but I do recall reading there was a lot of complaints from OTA viewers in that part of the market.

It was sold to Paxson, who changed it to WPXC, the Pax affiliate for Jacksonville; today, like most other Pax stations, they're now carrying Ion.
