WJYY COL

WJYY's COL is Concord... we now know they will be moving to Village West in Gilford. Does this fall within the 25 mile studio location law or will we see a COL-change?

From the FCC's website.

The Report and Order, released on August 11, 1998, adopted rules which allow a station to locate its main studio at any location within the principal community contour of any station licensed to the same community of license, or 25 miles from the reference coordinates of the center of its community of license, whichever it chooses.

While the principal community contour of WJYY might not reach there, I would be willing to be that WEVO, also licensed to Concord's does.
Which would make it legal.

So they can choose to use the contour of WEVO? Does not seem to differentiate between commercial and non-com either. WOW they could move it beyond the 25 Mile radius then. That does not seem to be within the spirit of the rule does it? It might also bring complaints from the public if they move it too far away. Won't matter, They are closer than 25 miles at the gilford location I think.

I'm pretty sure Concord to Gilford fits in that 25 mile circle, but as PTR said, WEVO and Channel 21 put enough signal into Gilford to make it OK anyway. Nassau may not be the world's best radio operator, but their engineering talent is some of the best.

Yes any station. It gets even weirder, think of the big time AM signals in some cities. You could put studios for one of the FM stations in Boston out in Palmer, MA, due to WBZ's contour., or a New York City station could have studios in New Haven, CT., thanks to the 880 contour.

How about 101.5?

For Shapiro? Hooksett is a ways from Meredith...

Good point, according to Google Maps Distance calculator, it's roughly 37 miles. Further search of Meredith only comes up with one other licensed station, LPFM-- WANH.

He could apply for a COL change, but I don't know of LPFM's count as far as licensed stations in a community.

Another option? Have a manned office/studio (doesn't have to be used--just functional) within 25 miles of Meredith? Extra $$$ however.

I would be willing to bet they do. It is a aural service to the community.

They do not count. Ask the 92.7 in Prince Frederick MD (WWXT?) that just tried to do a COL move based on the claim that the LPFM licensed to Prince Frederick would count as remaining "first local service" - it got denied.

Mr. Shapiro would have to maintain public file and control point within Meredith Market for 101.5. It also has to be manned duing regular buisiness hours. Don't think he is just simulcasting 107.7. If he does, he might have a seperate sales staff and seperate spots from the Lakes region. Make sense?

OK, I'll play the game Speculation!

I speculate a quick spin off.
Why would he want a single station in a over crowded under populated market?

I don't see why he would not simulcast WTPL. Find a small office somewhere in Meredith or Laconia and stick a sales person or two+a receptionist and sell.

I would think that a News/Talk/Sports station in the Lakes would do well. Give WEMJ and WNTK (to a point) some competition.

Anyone know is Mr. Shapiro is still using his 107.1 translator for WTPL in Concord?

I'm told that 107.7 can be heard clearly up in the lakes region. Most everyone I talk to think that he will simulcast 101.5 with 107.7 programming. I'm not sure about that. Seems like overkill. They also take some money already from the lakes region I'm told. Maybe a differentiated format like Classic Rock to fit inbetween Plymouth active rock and what will be The Hawk 104.9 classic hits. Either way he has to have offices, sales staff and studios up there. If he does put on Oldies 99 might he simulcast that format up there. I don't see it. As I remember 99.1 gets up there nicely and again would be overkill. I think the only thing I'm confident with is his attempt to put Oldies 99 back on. Beyond that is anyone's guess. That is WHENEVER he gets the stations. Nothing has been filed at the commission yet.

101.5 has an opportunity to gop for a power increase. Shapiro's 101.7 in Newport no longer exists.
