WJYY loses Midday Jock

WPST/Trenton APD/MD/midday talent Gabrielle Vaughn joins WBLI/Long Island for MD/midday duties. She will start on Monday, March 27.

-As you may or may not know GABRIELLE was voice tracking from Trenton to 105.5 WJYY in Concord on the midday position.

God knows what is gonna happen to shuffle the JYY Morning/Midday spots again.

Presumably she could still record voicetracks from her new station if JYY wants to keep her.

But in markets the size of Concord, there's a lot of jock turnover anyway.

That's the funniest post I've read all night. Thanks for the laugh.

Remember this, kids, especially in the small markets: Once you go tracked, you never go back.

Maybe Im am naive but dont you think that voice tracking will be like satelite was, stations did it for a number of years and then went back live because they missed the local sound or because they sold the station and new owners took over? I have been at a few stations that cut their live staff to make the books look better to sell the station, then after about a year the new owners went live again because in small markets people want local content.

Off the top of my head I can't think of many examples where a small market station that was automated/satellite went live again. WKXL is the only one I can think of, and frankly most of the satellite fare was far better than what they do now. Live for the sake of being live doesn't cut it...you need to be able to offer quality programming. If you suck no one's gonna listen whether you're live or canned. Voicetracking is just like any other tool...the results depend on the skill of the user. Some jocks "get it", others don't.

I know a number of small market stations in NY that have done the sat then live thing and it has payed off. Your right it does depend on the quality, but then again if Joe Bob can only get a few radio stations on his radio he is willing to listen to crap sometime just to hear local stuff like weather, school closings and such.

Not true. WLKZ Wolfeboro was on the bird and sorta went live in the late 90's. They put a VHS tape on elp for the overnights, but were otherwise live from 5:30am til 11pm. WFTN FM dumped JRN a year or two ago and is live all except for Romeo and Open House Party. They are even live on the weekends. I think WGXL Hanover dumped JRN too. I can think of more, but it'll take a while.

The station voicetracks part of the morning show, middays, afternoons, and nights, and has no jock on overnights. Nassau New England is a killer.

Notice how I specify the region...because WPST in NJ is live just about all of the day. I wish Corporate would stop this "lets voicetrack a CHR all day" mentality.

Actually, WLKZ was always live in AM drive, and went live in 1993 5:30am until 7pm and used the bird for nights/overnights. There were a few live weekend shifts, but not many. I left before the VHS tape era, but I heard (admittedly 3rd hand)that the bird had to be killed because the fees went unpaid. Based on the financial condition of the station when I was there, that wouldn't surprise me, but as I said, I have no direct knowledge of what caused the change.
IIRC, didn't Bob Bittner at WJIB also use the "VHS manuever"?
As far as WFTN, anyone know when they join the bird for Romeo?

Hi stranger. They join Romeo from 7pm until 5:30 the next morning. It's a good show and appropriate for a station like Mix imho. Mix is getting a new computer system that will be VT enabled. It'll be interesting to see what happens. My guess is a few weekend folks may have their hours cut, but I bet most everyhing will stay the same.
