hey, all. just thought i'd drop in and explain my side of the situation at WKAB. Joe Reilly took over
at the end of march, and they day he came in, there was a general staff meeting, and individual ones.
In my one-on-one, Joe and Carey Paul (whom i like and respect a lot) said they really liked my airwork,
but they were "closing" the board for a while and they'd have to lay me off; they firgured about 5
weeks or so. I said i couldn't guarantee Joe that i wouldn't look for work in that time frame, but then,
a bit later in the meeting, i said i was going to concentrate on songwriting full-time. That's partly true;
i was songwriting collaborator with The Badlees for 15 years. The other reason i offered that excuse was
i felt, at that time, if Joe were to call me back full-time, it would be for less than i was making at the time
of the station's sale, what with WKAB under the financial/revenue stress it was under at that time. In
hindsight, because of the financial condition the station was in only a few short months ago, i would've
probably been called back, 5 or 6 hours a week to voicetrack, with an hour a week for 'cellarful of noise'.
Needless to say, i couldn't afford to live on that, so i came back to WAZL.
I have no bad feelings or ill-will towards Joe, or his wife, or Carey, or anyone there. I miss my gig on
what is now WHLM-FM (by the way, probably the dumbest thing the current owners of WFYY did-ditch
a set of heritage call letters), and i miss doing "cellarful" but, hey, at least i have a gig. I do enjoy the
oscar peterson and ella fitzgerald and frank sinatra i play, though....
later,
