WKAT Going Spanish Christian Talk

W

War Of Attrition

I have it on good authority that WKAT will be flipping to Spanish Christian Teaching and Talk in the very near term. Currently Salem is operating this new spanish format in Denver and Atlanta.

WKAT/WMCU is currently running liners teasing the WMCU return for November 17th.

You mean "new for them," I hope. Spanish Christian teaching and talk has a long history, with stations in Puerto Rico going back to the 70's, and groups like Paulino Bernal's organization doing it in Texas for nearly two decades. A Salem spin-off to one of the original investors has had this concept in LA for over 6 years, and now networks it with two or three more stations in California in places like the Inland Empire and San Diego.

WWRV in New York has been Christian teaching since 1989 or 1990.

The contemporary Christian music format on WBRQ in Puerto Rico, USA, is consistently top 10 in a 130 station market.

I meant new to them, although that was not as clear as it should have been from my post. From last week's Salem conference call, Spanish Teaching and Talk is Salem's new and 4th strategic format after Christian Teaching and Talk, Contemporary Christian Music, and Conservative New/Talk.

I remember when that sale was first announced. I couldn't figure out why they sold it to board member Roland Hinz instead of operating it themselves. Perhaps they will reacquire it and move the network from Camarillo to Glendale.

Nueva Vida is an incredible success story.

All the new WKAT really is, is the rebirth of the old WVCG (whose 1080 frequency Salem bought), or the old
Radio Luz 1700 (isn't it the same GM at Salem/Miami who ran that one??). Spanish Christian Teaching is no stranger to South Florida radio.
