WKCW Drops Gospel

In SW Connecticut tonight they dominate the crowded frequency. Quit listening at about 11pm local.
That's quite a reach! Well, they were coming in fairly strong around 9:00 last night in the Laurel-Beltsville (MD) area.

Can't hear 'em 40 miles South, day or night.

Where are they transmitting from these days? Is it the old WPRZ sticks? The old KCW tower a few miles North seems to be gone. At least I haven't noticed it the last few times I drove by. It used to have the "Big K" K on it from the old days of Big K Country.

WPRZ still has their letters on one of the towers.

WKCW has moved its transmitter to Warrenton, VA, just by Rt. 15-29, to be with the 1250 towers. The old tower was located a few miles further east of Warrenton. I don't quite have the right info, though I remember seeing that single stick there. I think it was taken down before developers built houses and a shopping center there.

That makes sense, because there are a bunch of new mini-mansions on the road where WKCW's tower used to be. I can't remember the name of the road though. Used to commute by there every darn morning too......

WKCW's "stick" is co-located with AM 1250, the former WPRZ. The towers, yes, still say WPRZ. Very cool to stand there and stare up at the calls on the tower.

WKCW was, at one time, on Lee street - about 3 miles northeast of where they are now. They are now running 22,000 watts from the "new" site.

If you were never inside of the old house on Lee street... it was cool, yet very creepy at the same time. The smell of mold, old records, and "state of the art" Spotmaster consoles. It was the first place I saw a digital production system (SAW) back in 1996. It was the last place I saw, um, SAW also.

The place was famous for snakes in the building too.

Thank you! Lee Street!

I remember that place up on the little rise there clearly visible from 29. Never went inside, but it looked old even way back when. Big K Country used to play some good old classics then. Of course I guess they weren't classics at the time :D

It was funny - the old building had something that looked like a headstone out front. It wasn't...but I've forgotten what it was.

The things that were left behind there - or thrown away when it was vacated is very sad..

I think about that a lot as I travel around the country and pass by those old stations that are most likely automated now, if they are even still operating at all.

These last three days, I've noticed that WKCW's audio feed is down. I wonder what's up with that? They're still on the air with their Classic MOR format, though.

For the last week and a half, 1420's been coming in fairly listenable at my 40 miles or so South of them. Daytime only though. They get lost in the clutter at night. Pretty good mix, but no DJ's. Sounds like some old jingles being played for ID's. Lots of them too, like every 3 songs.
