WKDD Tower Move Back Home

No one that I know..not anymore!

I've heard them in Warren at one of the laundry mats and I DO listen to WKDD-HD2 for Club Phusion.

No word on the status of this CP?
This would finally allow WKDD to become an Akron station again.
If their Hot AC format goes nowhere after the move (and it will probably won't change much in the rankings) then why not go after WNIR with a two station punch (like Clear Channel has done in larger markets). Let WHLO carry the syndicated programs and program local talk on 98.1. Probably won't happen because it would cost CC more money than they would like to spend (ask Matt Patrick). But it would finally give CC a signal advantage over WNIR.

On a side note, WHLO's signal sure needs improved. Too much signal goes south leaving the north/northeast sections wanting.

That is an excellent idea! Local talk is the ONLY way WKDD can recapture anything like the numbers they once enjoyed. The only way WKDD can ever catch WNIR is to go right after them. The current format is laughable. You pointed out the problem...it would cost $. You gotta spend it to make it! :(

Can't do it. Protecting a station on 640 in Toronto, Canada.

I don't think they're directly protecting Toronto. WHLO is older than AM640 Toronto. WHLO has always protected CFCO Chatham. If they moved to the 1350 site they would have to adjust their pattern anyway. If that involves new protection for Toronto it would not diminish Akron coverage. In fact that would send more signal over Akron,, which is what they need.

By the way. Does ANYONE know when WKDD is moving?

FYI, the antenna is currently being replaced and the move is expected in about a month. Will there be a big promotion for this?

By treaty, WHLO has to keep their signal out of Canada... and Canadians on that frequency have to keep their out of the US. What WHLO should do is apply for a COL change and move their towers northeast of Cleveland (Collinwood, Euclid, etc.), flatten out the back of the pattern and they could give half decent coverge to Cleveland... and probably cover Akron pretty well during the day. You could then move WHLO's intellectual property to 1350. Then take 640 sports talk to compete with WKNR or flank WTAM with additional (mainly syndicated) talk.

If you moved 640 NE to the Cleveland suburbs they would have a decent daytime signal and a lousy night signal (500 watts). You can forget them having any competative signal in Akron. They need to maximize their signal in Akron and moving to the 1350 site could do that.

Mays and gang to sell Akron/Canton

I wish I could say that this will remain Clear Channel...wait, strike that.

I am glad that they will eventually sell these radio stations!

The last of the maynoaise just stepped down from leadership at CC on Basse road. Why? They are realizing they must have 18 BILLION dollars up front in less than three years and the only way thats going to happen is by getting some sweet deals on these properties.

AKRON/CANTON is nice, 3FM 2AM cluster in a market without a ton of owners

Rubber City just sold off their Lansing Cluster for four million dollars and could potentially pick up two more FM's and another AM in Akron.

Here are a few ideas....

WKDD, WRQK and WHLO all get spun off to the land of Rubber City on West Market (almost like coming home for a few of the stations)

WHOF and WARF get spun off into a trust or to Next since they just came out looking to add more properties.

Rubber City then has
WAKR Talk/Oldies
WHLO News/Talk
WQMX Country
WONE Classic Rock
WKDD Adult Top 40
WRQK Mainstream Rock

Next then has
WHBC News/Talk
WARF Sports
WHBC Hot AC
WHOF Soft AC

You still have WNIR in Akron owned by MediaCom
You still have WDPN/WDJQ in Canton owned by Peterson

I don't think Rubber City wants to grow its cluster in Akron. Like Lansing, this area does not have a great growth potential. They might want to look elsewhere. Who would want WARF? CC would like to dump it but it has little value and even less potential.

... documentation? Link? Proof? Just a rumor? Inquisitive minds want to know!
Thanks

I am hearing nothing even remotely approaching rumors that Freedom Avenue is for sale, to Rubber City or NextMedia anyone else.

I AM hearing rumors about the CBS Radio Cleveland cluster, which we've written about before (with the help of R-I's own Tom Taylor and his daily column).

BTW, we aren't long from the original subject here, the move of WKDD back to Bellaire Lane. It's happening pretty soon.

Could Cumulus pick them up? It'd kind of be full circle for Rock 107, as that's who they were owned by previous to Clear Channel purchasing them.

Cumulus made a nice offer for CBS Cleveland which would compliment their foray into Cincinnati. They would then be in four Ohio markets with substantial footholds.

Clear Channel hasn't publicly announced that any stations at Freedom are for sale, but we know if the money is right, CC will sell. They have 18 BILLION they have to pay up in two years! Akron Canton could help with that overall payoff.

The CBS/Cumulus deal is dead as a doornail. CBS was asking for tons of money, nevermind that they exited Denver at a fire-sale price. Not going to be the case here though.

And Clear Channel is in no means to sell off the Canton/Akron cluster. Plus I highly doubt that either NextMedia or Rubber City would even try to buy into that group. Neither of them need or want to. In Rubber City's case, they have all they need, plus they invest nicely and handsomely into all three stations - something that would be more difficult to do if they bought into more stations here.

Personally, I think WKDD's problems not only trace back to the move to 98.1, but also with the moving of their studios to North Canton after spending decades in Akron. Just my opinion though.
