Recently, I was in Cleveland for the first time in six years. WKDD seemed to have an outstanding signal all over the city. I am not sure about suburban reception. Why doesn't the station also target Cleveland? Is it because of Kiss? Kiss's COL is also Akron, and they seem to do fine targeting Cleveland...
 
WKDD has been a heritage for years in Akron at 96.5 and later 98.1. My guess it won't target Cleveland because of WQAL, which has a similar format to 'KDD. For much of the 80's and 90's, the station was more of a factor in its home base for years than up north, though did get a bump in 1999 after Jammin' 92.3 bit the dust.

Plus, WAKS is at where 'KDD used to be and its license to Akron dating back years before the big frequency move of 2001. I think CC transfered KISS to Akron following the switch from public to private ownership a while back.
 
When the original WKDD 96.5 switched to 98.1 back when the big ownership changes occurred, they were on a tower NE of Canton.

Later CC put up a tower just east of Hartville, and that changed the signal a bit.

But, a couple years ago, CC applied and had WKDD's city of license changed to Munroe Falls (ridiculous FCC rules these days...LOL). Recently, WKDD's transmitter site moved back to Quick Road in Cuyahoga Falls...but, they are directional. Still, being back in their original 96.5 transmitter site (though on a different tower) does help it's signal to the north, even though they have a directional coverage pattern.
 
96.5 has always had an Akron COL.

Once CC moved the WAKS calls and KISS format there (moving from 104.9--which is now WCLV), they have promoted and set themselves up as a Cleveland station. Their studios and tower are all in Cuyahoga County. Any connection to Akron these days is all for FCC technicalities. Other than that, 96.5 under the WAKS banner screams "Cleveland" all the way.
 
Plus, KDD has shifted to a much more CHR direction, adding a number of hip hop titles, even more so than Q 104, so that would cannibalize their Kiss ratings/revenues if they decided to target Cleveland.
