WKDF Makes Big On Air Changes
CITADEL Country WKDF/NASHVILLE morning host EDDIE FOX, co-host LISA MANNING and MD/afternoon driver JUSTIN "STUNTBOY" COLE have exited the station.

I guess this means the station is headed back to a classic rock type format huh? ;)

Now you country music fans don't have a cow now, but I thought I'd get the rumor started here. lol

If they ever get that HD2 thing going, they could bring back some rock format again.
oh well

If they follow the HD Alliance, their HD-2 is supposed to be blues.

It makes me sad to see Eddie, Justin, and Lisa get the boot. I count these three as personal friends from my time working with them at Citadel. They are true class acts and best wishes to them in finding their next stop.

True, I hate to see anyone lose their jobs (Zack, do you have a spot for them in Huntsville?). But the greater truth is that while KDF would be a great country radio station if it were set up anywhere else, it has just been flat out manhandled by superior country competition. And it seems that once that was realized, it was shifted into "coast," where it stayed for far too long.

People started saying "Maybe they're switching back to rock!" almost before the news broke, so I didn't get a chance to start that rumor. Maybe I'll start the rumor that they're hiring Coyote and Cathy or that they'll be filling in shifts with one of the ABC country formats. Oops, too late, heard both of those before I finished the previous sentence. ;D

Now it's time to see what Bud (as in beer) Ford (as in truck) can do -- he's had PD experience besides country, you know. But alas, it appears they'll give country even yet another try. My 2 cents: He's going to have to do a lot more than pull his own airshift and find a new morning team. He's going to have to find a new image for the station.

One of largest percentages of the Nashville radio audience and potential audience see KDF's image as "the rock station that I grew up with, that went country" and they're still waiting for the second coming of Rock 103.3. Another one of the largest percentages of the Nashville radio audience and potential audience see KDF's image as the #3, or for some, #4, country station in town. And again, it's not they have done country wrong, they've simply been bested.

That's a big image problem. If they want to stay country, they've got to find something other than today's country hits and the legends. They've got to find something that the other country stations in town aren't doing. Sure, they have the Titans, but that only helps them through half of the year, and even then, it seems they're only existing in their little brother Zone's shadow.

It seems like all of the other things that country stations do to improve their ratings are already being done elsewhere in town, so how do you find that something unique? As Dave Ramsey would say, "I can't tell you what to do, but I can tell you what I would do."

I would tip my hat to KDFs legacy, and introduce into the playlist some of the music that made it famous -- Southern Rock and Country. Make a move to keep some of the country audience with Hot Country, make a grab for the old audience with Southern Rock classics.

Suddenly I'm hearing all of the naysayers shouting "Country/rock hybrids never work!" Just a minute. Have you heard Lonestar 92.5 out of Dallas yet? That format just blows me away! True there's more classic rock than country here, but it is creating a lot of buzz. Why? It's not because it's a country/rock hybrid, it's because what they've created is uniquely "Texas". Ever notice Austin City Limits isn't just country acts, or western acts, its also rock acts? Texas music is about a mix of all of that, and Lonestar captures the sound and feeling of Texas pretty well.

Now WSM-AM is always going to be uniquely "Nashville" in terms of historical country, so why not go in a slighty different direction and go uniquely "Southern"? Create a station that can appeal to today's 18-34 country fans, redneck rockers, NASCAR enthusiasts, Dukes of Hazzard watchers, and football tossers everywhere.

Why not? Everything else country is already being done.

I guess as long as Nashville has The rock 105.9, 97.1 and Jack 96.3, I really do not see KDF going back to rock, but what the heck do I know?

The Lone star format sounds just what Nashville needs. Would it be safe to call this format progressive country or album country?

What I would like to see happen (UH OH, here it comes again) is take the best elements of what made KDA FM and KDF rock great )1970-1999. Throw out the top 40 stuff KDF ventured into at times during their almost 40 year stint as a rock station. KDF at times venturened into a very mainstream sounding radio station, at times almost top 40 sounding. Throw that stuff out and look at the "rock that mattered" A-Z. Aerosmith to Canned Heat to Dire Straits to Pink Floyd- To Rolling Stones and so on. Turn it over to someone like Dave Walton and let him program the new KDF rocker. Just my opinion. Relax though, it will never happen!!! lol

Or if they want to stay in the country format and carve out a unique niche, they could go classic country. Sure, you've got WSM AM doing classic country and it has the heritage and all, but still, a lot of people would rather listen to FM given the chance for the better sound and reception. I think something along the lines of "Country Legends 97.1" Houston or "98.1 the Legend" Chattanooga, might be interesting on the Nashville FM band. It would be a way to differentiate themselves from 'SIX and "the Wolf". Or if they don't want to go that old, how about a country format that focuses on big hits from the late 80's to today. (along the lines of Sirius's "Prime Country"). Basically a "90s and now" country format that focuses on the huge country hits that were so big in the 90's with just a few select big chart hits from today. Anyway, I think focusing on a different niche is a must. I don't care if Nashville is "Music City USA"; three full power mainstream country formats going after the same exact audience is overkill.

Going Classic Country wouldn't be going for a niche, because it's already being done as you mention by WSM-AM. Even though it's AM, new technologies make it sound even better than when the music was aired on AM originally, so FM's not that much of an improvement unless the whole library's been remastered. Besides, no one will ever do classic country better than WSM-AM, even if true just in the listeners' ears.

I must also bring to this discussion the intresting choice of Shannon as the morning drive fill in. Shannon, who is behind Kix Brooks' weekly ABC Radio [now Citadel] show. Shannon, who once did middays for KDF 103, the Rock station. Shannon, who could carry her own show on serve in a sidekick role to a new morning show. That should be enough to keep busy all of you folks who are missing Lost until February.

If memory serves correctly and gee, why wouldn't it? ;), I think Shanon was at KDF from the mid eighties up to around 1993.

I remember she started overnights when she first got to 103.3 KDF.

She hosted a pretty cool Beatles show on 103.3 for awhile where they let her play Beatles tunes beyond the consultant tested Hey Jude, Come together and so on.

I wonder if she would come back and do rock again if it was programmed beyond
the narrow 300-500 consultant tested classic rock tunes.

No offense intended to anyone in this list but let me get this straight:
First, they fire Jeff Lyon off nights (CLEARLY the best talent on the station.)
Then, they fire Kim & Dean off afternoons. Like them or not, they were a far better alternative to the Big Bubba show across town and unlike anything else in town.
Now they have fired the rest of the staff, including Lisa Manning who (in this man's opinion) had the most talent of those left behind. Is anyone left? Rebecca on middays? Why did they keep her if they are clearly cleaning house? Or has she just not gotten the memo yet? And regarding Bud Ford in afternoons: A PD who puts himself on the air is not unlike the attorney who represents himself in court - he has a fool for a client.

So what does all of these firings really mean? I know messages forums are a good place to speculate and spread rumors. So, what does all of these mass cannings mean?

Does it mean that a new format might really be looked at and if a new music format is looked at over at 103?,Let me put the idea in for the deep album rock thing. Yea right, like that will actually be looked at. ;) I know KDF auctioned off their rock albums a year or so ago. Or someone did anyway. I saw it on ebay. Is KDF ordering new rock album shipments from the labels??

We all know God intended WKDF FM to be a rock format. It's just the natural order of things !! lol

Seriously though. Do you guys really think that they will look at another music format?

I met the morning guy at KDF a few years ago. Nice guy and I certainly do not like to see people lose their jobs. People do get invested in a community don't they? Their homes are here;there kids go to school here and so on.

I know it is tough to lose a radio job, any job, but in radio it is tougher. I know once let go, it it is not easy to latch on in a similar station.

Tell you the truth, I do not listen to this station or any of the country stations so I am not overly familiar with their airstaff. If these firings are true I guess there must be something going on over there.

One thing about another message forum I frequent. I do not post there, but I do lok at what is going on there is the New York message forums. When there are rumors cookin' out there, that monitor of theirs, Herr Sniffen, does a good job of finding out what is really going on in the New York radio world. Cah mahn you Nashville radio insiders. What is going on at 103.3? lol

The only way that KDF will be changing formats anytime soon is to tweak their current format. If and whatever changes they make, they will still be largely Current Country. This is the age of Bud (as in beer) Ford (as in truck) and they are going to see what he can do. Speculation, to be close to target, should be kept in the realm of Current Country AND... legends, classics, hot country, country rock, rock, southern rock, bluegrass, western, western swing, americana, progressive country, alternative country, country talk, Christian, southern gospel, folk, comedy, redneck rap, or whatever, because, for now, they are commited to country.

As for why the firings, they've held on for a while now being the country also-ran in this city. They want to see if they can improve rather than throw in the towel.

I wish KDF would go back to playing Jason and the Scorchers and Webb Wilder. :D

I also wish I could go back in time and listen to the Nashville Tapes too.

I listened to Bud Ford today and he sounds so much like Eddie Foxx... I thought they had changed Eddie Foxx to afternoons until I heard him say his name. I'm surprised Becca has not got the boot yet, what kind of direction are they going in??

Actually, Nashville already has that kinda station - it's on 95.5! Or as 103 referred to it in liners, the "cheesy soft rock" that you don't have to sit through to hear the "legends" on KDF...

If I were to guess, I'd say they'll try and plug in someone syndicated for the AM drive. (Yes, in Nashville and against the mighty Gerry House, sometimes you have to throw your hands up in the air and play it simple.) Yet I still would have kept Lisa back to do local breaks during that show.

Also, you gotta wonder if KDF would flip now that the big July 4th shindig they co-sponsor (along with sister The Zone) has passed. Yet during the show, they had personalities from both stations - Plaster and Daunic from 104.5 and Stunt Boy and I believe Becca (process of elimination, right?) from 103.3 - between sets going on mic asking listeners to tune into both stations. So who knows...

Incidentally, I just got back from BNA and I got a whole buncha airchecks of 103 WKDF just in case they flip the switch. :) (Incidentally, as of yesterday Sweet Becca was "on vacation".)

Call the Place the Titan and let a Lonestar Dallas format rip..it will work..just leave out some of those regional tunes and add some Nashville stuff du jour.. course this would have to be with spots..there is football to pay for..

Well, if KDF did go to a Lone Star format, I'd sure as heck listen.

I have to be honest, I am not a big fan of today's modern country, but if 103.3 did head in the direction of a "Lone Star" format or a progressive country format, I think it would be interesting enough for die hard core vintage rock person to listen.

The Lone Star format was put in place partly by "red Beard" the famous Memphis album rock DJ. That station has been paterved to some degree after XM's X country, but probably not as adversome as the XM version.

You just got to like a station that would play a deeper cut from Wilie Nelson followed by "Hear my train coming by Jimi Hendrix. Or play an old selection by The Flying Burrito Brothers. Then there are the up and coming country music acts that traditional country radio will not play for whatever reason.

If a deep cut vintage rock is not in the cards, then bring on progressive country radio!! I think it would be met with approval from fans and media alike.

Its a fun format but the myth of it is not quite what it really is. The station mostly Classic Rocks like ZZ top, Stevie Ray etc. with a rare country tune from an outlaw like willie waylon johnny cash..and a Texas act like Kevin Fowler or Cross Canadian Ragweed..the real deal is no spots...ever.. all music with a few moments from the personalities like Redbeard. It is simply going very well, and with PPM could be top 10 soon. It could easily win over Nashville by taking a little from everybody...and fit right in with football fans too!

No, 95.5 is NOT that kind of station. There's a huge difference between Lonestar and 95.5. The non-country songs being played by 95.5 ARE "cheesy soft rock" songs. The format is equivalent to a countryized Mix 92.9.

Jason, maybe you need to change the 9-volt battery in your old transistor if you thing Foxx and Ford sound alike on air.

As much as I like Lonestar -- I find myself streaming it several times a week now -- I don't think you'll see KDF going Lonestar. But I could see them mixing in Southern Rock with Hot or Modern Country, and it being successful, given that much of KDF's heritage was built on Skynard and ZZ Top. If KDF doesn't add Southern Rock first, I could see a Cromwell pairing of a Lonestar-type format with the Buzz as being potentially more successful than what they're doing now. But I couldn't see KDF adopting a full-blown Lonestar format.
