WKDF Mornings

Marty McFly was on KDF this morning with Jack Shell broadcasting from Mt. Juliet Kroger. It was good to hear him on the radio again. I haven't listened to KDF much lately (it just blends in with others), but after listening this morning for him I had it on in the car still at lunch and heard Becca, who I've always liked. In my opinion, now that they have Marty, (and if they didn't have Wiley) they'd have the best DJs of a (FM) Nashville country station...other than Gerry House/Mike Bohan of course. (I still think Gator and the Stykman on 94.7 WGSQ are nashville worthy.) Also, I noticed when CC did their radiothon for flood victims that they have a lot of good DJs all around, I have to give them that. WUBT's AG and WNRQ's Proud Mary were a surprisingly good team. I like WSM-FM, but how do they pull better numbers than KDF? They should have stayed "WSM-FM" instead of the silly "Wolf." I guess people have had their dials on 95.5 or 97.9 for years and years and just don't ever change it.

Agreed with KDF. Jack Shell is an amazing talent. He has the gift of reaching out and bringing the community to him. People like him and he respects and protects his city, and that is a great combination. Kudos, Jack.

Jack Shell is very talented. But can you explain "respects and protects"? And please define "his city".

AND please define " amazing" . I just don't hear him being amazing. He's ok but would not call him amazing!

I won't dispute whether "amazing" is or isn't the right adjective, but he is a fine air talent, and a wizard in the production room. As a production director, he wrote great copy and produced top-notch spots. In that regard, he has what it takes to go to a larger market.

First off, thanks for the nice words.  I know "Beatlenut" and the respect is mutual... and I hope you know that, bro.  The nice words said about me here are flattering and gratuitous at the same time, but appreciated nonetheless.  :) Yes, Marty and I did the morning show together as Wylie was home nursing a case of strep throat on Friday... on TOP of cleaning out her flooded Franklin apartment (yes, she suffered too).  For doing a broadcast with a guy I had only met twice before our live show on Friday... I must say, we had a great time, a LOT of fun, and worked quite well together on the air.  I am very excited to hear what he brings to WKDF as our morning show and station continues to grow.  Overall, I consider myself blessed to a.) be working and b.) work with some really terrific professionals at WKDF... that includes Wylie Rose, who is an outstanding broadcaster... and I'm proud she's our morning anchor.  As for adjectives like "amazing' and "respects and protects" "his city", you know... we all have done ALL we can on the radio over the last week to get things back to normal after the floods, and I'd be remiss to not give a ton of credit to Becca who showed EVERYONE how to do it this week on the air (talk about a tough act to follow each day).  She set the tone, and showed how it's done, calmly and with much class.  Nashville may not be "my city" (aren't MOST of us transplants?), but it has been my home for nine years now, and I have developed amazing friendships here, I met the love of my life and got married here, have had a rather colorful radio career here, and am passionate about radio and strive for quality in everything I do.  I live here, I play here, and my wife and I are very active in our community.  I can only hope that my on-air and personal efforts in the clean-up effort has made, and can make somewhat of a difference as we move forward, and I believe deep inside that the best radio is the the kind that reaches out and touches it's community.  This week, we at WKDF, and every radio station in Nashville for that matter, got to do just that, and I hope that all the broadcasters in Nashville working today are proud of all we accomplished, and know that we all reached out to our communities and proved that local, terrestrial radio still matters.  People turned the RADIO on, as they were protecting their homes and lives last weekend, and called US for information, because we ARE still valid in the eyes of the listeners, and those who make an appointment to tune in each day.  Thanks again for the kind words, and queries regarding anything else on WKDF should be directed at management, via phone or personal e-mail, not here.  At the end of the day, all that REALLY matters is how each of our station's real LISTENERS feel, and I don't think any of them post here, or know this message board exists (or I hope not anyway).  I also hope that with what has occurred in Nashville lately, that we can put aside all the ugliness, gossip, and hearsay that exists on this message board and band together to make Nashville radio great... and just quit picking on each other.

Yes Jack "People turned the RADIO on, as they were protecting their homes and lives last weekend..." BUT radio let them down in a big way! Your station had nothing or very little at best as did your sister station. I do hope that as a group you learned that bad things happen on the weekend and now have a game plan for the next bad thing to come along.

Look, "Wind"... that's not true at all. Even our program director went on the air and did an outstanding job last Sunday directing the flow of information... and throughout the week. Many people couldn't leave their homes to GET to the radio station... or ANY radio station for that matter last weekend, but he did. I'm proud of what we've done in the aftermath, and I know ONE person in particular whose neighborhood is an entire wash, but they had WKDF on as they were unloading their lives into trucks, helping their neighbors while the floods were sweeping through their homes. We DID make a difference during and after the floods. Even if it seemed like little to you, it was a lot to those who needed it. I'm not going to get into a flame war with you on here, because that's pointless. Again, call management at 244-9533 and complain to them if you have a problem... airing it on some message board isn't going to solve ANY problems. I think the ENTIRE Nashville radio market was amazing, even WSM-AM who was flooded out and had to move to the transmitter. Lightning 100 who stayed on the air online. The Clear Channel cluster and their radio-thon was outstanding. Even Cumulus' WTN was all over it. We all did what we could at WKDF... sorry it wasn't up to your standards, "Wind".

Regarding the earlier attack on WKDF's flood coverage - you were either not listening, or simply making a false claim.

I am an avid FM DXer, and have two tuners that continuously record audio for DXing purposes. I had one of them set to 103.3 on Sunday - here's an example of the sort of coverage they were doing (my recordings are :10 past the hour so TOH IDs don't get cut off while DXing)

09:10 - 10:10: Two songs... host "Cooper" with Svr T-Storm warning... commercials... road closing info... one song... more road closings (with 2 listener calls) and Svr T-Storm warning... one song... cut into to WTVF-5 talking about river flood stages... back to host with shelter info & T-storm warning... commercials... wx forecast... two songs... road closing info, "stay off the roads", T-storm warning... commercials... general flood info & interstate closings (with a listener call)... three songs... emergency phone numbers, road closings (two listener calls)... one song... brief t-storm warning update... two songs

15:10 - 16:10: 45 sec of dead air... one song... host Dave Kelly talking on the phone with Darlas Rai about school closings, and Wylie Rose about helping/volunteering (interrupted by Gov Bredesen's press conference)... two songs... wx forecast for rest of day (with listener call)... three songs... power outage, info about flood rescues (calling for people with boats to help in Bellevue)... one song... info about drinking water in Portland, call with Darlas Rai on school closings, Wylie Rose with weather stuff, road closings, etc... two songs... answering a listener's question about the Portland water situation... one song... listener call with info on Portland water... one song... plug for upcoming Karl Dean press conference... one song... another press conference plug... one song... into press conference

LOOK JACK I tuned in on Saturday AND Sunday and must have hit YOUR FINE coverage everytime a song was on! WOW that is strange! IF this is what you did this is good! Lets all pat you and your staff on the back. YES WWTN did a great job but this was a 2 day event and yes at times I even heard them doing "normal" radio! At least some stations could have run audiio of TV ( like mix did at times) Lets just hope our next event happens Monday- Friday!

I don't know about you, Jack, but I find the flood a great metaphor... My career has been underwater ever since I had the great misfortune of becoming associated with Cumulus. Still, getting bounced from there was the best thing that ever happened to me. Continued success at WKDF.

I hear a radio station at 108.9 is looking for a manager of the week. He/she/it must be virtually clueless to anything going on with corporate radio 2010, be an arrogant know it all and yet, not really know anything about anything, constantly CAPITALIZE words like a third grader, belittle everyone else, not have a clue how to help improve a damn thing in the industry, must be good at beating everyone up who doesn't meet his falsely established muster or expectations. College Mass Comm degree with an entitlement attitude preferred. Experience not necessary. Having never even walked into a station, except to ask for a free CD or T-shirt, increases chances of getting the job. Hourly wage without benefits guaranteed, those looking for career advancement need apply elsewhere. Ability to do drive-thru fast food restaurant VT-ing a plus.

Anybody know anyone that would be perfect for this job? Seems like this board is perfect to offer this chance to a blow hard or two...

:D

Oh my bad! How dare I say anything against the " amazing talent" that is Jack Shell! Thank you so much for having " the gift of reaching out and bringing the community to him." Oh and " People like him and he respects and protects his city, and that is a great combination" Get over your self man! When the storm hit I hit seek on my radio and all I got was Mix 92 airing the audio of WKRN. Then on Sunday all I got was music on WKDF and a ball game on WGFX. WWTN did a great job on Sunday as did a few othes. Monday was great but when people needed radio, radio let them down! I listened and this is what I got!

I applied at the wrong station! I went to 108.8 instead! No wonder I didn't get the job! Well, there's always NEXT WEEK...

Wind...just in case you didn't get it the first time...
and BTW...just exactly would you have staffed your station during this crisis?
Oh that's right...you're not affiliated in any way with any broadcast outlet. Never mind.
