WKDN Is All Music Today!

Quick question.....Does WKDN in the morning do Traffic & Weather?.....Sister station 94.7 WFME does traffic & weather reports twice an hour (15 & 45) but these aren't your typical traffic/weather reports....They sometimes take up to 5 minutes to do the traffic alone going over every road and bridge in the NYC tri-state area.....It's probably the most in depth traffic report I have ever heard on the AM/FM dial.....I find the reports helpful and it's the only time I ever listen to WFME....I was wondering if WKDN did the same thing.

About 10 years ago when I was an occasional WKDN listener, 'KDN did have traffic (and maybe weather) reports, but the traffic reports were nowhere near 5 minutes long as I recall.

Doesn't Harold Camping teach that he has figured out (yet again) the time that Christ will return? Now, since we know that the truth is no man will ever know that, that's good enough for me to steer clear of Family Radio. Family Radio, attractive and innocent sounding synonym for the word error.

WKDN uses one of the traffic services, I believe I remember hearing the name Tom McDonald from the Traffex command center. I'm at work and am not in Philly or Camden so I don't listen closely to the traffic report.

As for Harold Camping's teachings, I agree that he teaches in error as what he says does not line up with scripture, so I tune out ANY time he comes on even when he comes on to read scripture. The music Family Radio uses is the great music of the church, Harold Camping doesn't write lyrics or music, so it's safe to listen to. Sort of like a CCM station that plays great CCM or praise music then airs some dollar a hollar preacher who has doctrines you know don't line up with scripture. You still tune in for the CCM or praise and tune out when Pastor So and So comes on. Same with Family Radio, great music, Camping is their version of the dollar a holler preacher, I just tune out.

Family Radio also owns a LP TV station in north Jersey, WFME-DT. With a few exceptions, it is almost all Harold Camping all the time and does not have the "redeeming" quality of the music. So if you were able to receive it, I'm sure it would elicit the same reaction as his radio teaching.

You make a good point, Mike, about Camping not writing the lyrics. It is "the great music of the church," as you put it, that I see as the true value of Family Radio. I've been a student of Charles Wesley's hymns for more than twenty years. It is the meat that one finds in his lyrics, as well as other great hymn writers like Isaac Watts, that continues to be a valuable resource for the body of Christ in our day. In that regard, one cannot fault Family Radio.

WFME broadcasts every single EAS alert, including all the severe thunderstorm warnings for every single county in the New York metro. My college station monitors WFME for EAS, and so our EAS goes off for a severe thunderstorm 60 miles away.
WCBS 880 is great for traffic reports in the NYC suburbs, and 1010 WINS is the source for traffic within the city.
I wish the Family Radio stations were on AM instead of clogging up the FM band.

WFME's analog TV signal (is it still on the air?) is rather low-powered, but it does hold a full license. The digital antenna is on the 94.7 FM tower. (licensed to Newark, but I don't know what town the tower is in) The DTV station is nearly 10 times as powerful as the analog - it's still a lot smaller than the major NYC DTV stations but it's well beyond the realm of LPTV.

(one August afternoon, I was riding through central Mississippi, spinning the FM dial trying to find a decent program. Stopped when I heard the EAS data bursts. They stopped, and I heard: "The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for .... Marin and Sonoma Counties in Northern California."

It was a satellite-fed translator of Family's KEAR, San Francisco...)

No WFME is running only on DT-29....Analog TV-66 was taken off the air last month.

WFME-DT & WFME-FM are located atop South Mountain in West Orange, NJ at the corner of Prospect Ave & Mt Pleasant Ave (Route 10)....The WFME Studios are located at the transmitter site....This was also the same transmitter site of 100.3 WVNJ who in 1983 would become "Z-100" WHTZ and move to the ESB a short time later.....South Mountain is also home of 91.1 WFMU and some NYC backups.

Does anyone know whether this was also the original site of Channel 13 when it was licensed to Newark as WATV and was co-owned with WAAT Newark 970 (now WNYM Hackensack)? If so, I think WFME has been transmitting from that site since it was WAAT-FM. Gotta be close to 60 years!

Some *are* on AM.
http://radiotime.com/affiliate/a_34037/station/Family_Radio_Network_Radio_Stations.aspx

Two of the AMs are daytimers WBMD-750 and WBGR-860 Baltimore.

Before Camping (more about whom in a moment) bought WBMD, that station had other Christian preaching programs with fellows like John Dekker (a Presbyterian minister from Carney in Baltimore County), Carl McIntire (may he rest in peace), Sid Roth, Irving Baxter, and a couple of others I can't remember at present. Plus ethnic programming in certain weekend dayparts.

Apparently when Family Radio bought WBMD, its signal strength increased and/or its pattern was redirected to make my reception of WVCH virtually impossible. :(

Getting back to Harold Camping... I'm enbarrassed to say that in 1992 I bought one of his date-setting books, 1994?, where he used mathematics to set a second half of September 1994 time frame for Christ's return. :-[ OTOH if the baseball players weren't striking at the time... ;D
