WKDN LIVES ON... IN STATE COLLEGE, PENNSYLVANIA
Family Stations, Inc. has not sacrificed the WKDN call-sign with the sale of the FM station it adorned since it's 1959 inception.
The call-sign (which is believed to stand for the city it once served, KamDeN (Camden, NJ), is still in the Family Radio family after being in limbo for about one week. On April 23, 2012, the call-sign at their State College, PA. 1.8 kw station broadcasting at 88.3FM was changed from WXFR to WKDN.
In the December 2011 sale of their Annapolis station at 107.9FM which serves the Washington-Baltimore market, Family Radio did the same thing. The WFSI call-sign was moved to one of their two Baltimore AMs, displacing the WBGR call-sign back into the fcc pool where it is now joined by WXFR.
It would seem through these actions that Family Stations understands the importance of retaining the call-signs that its audience has long associated with their stations, despite being placed on much weaker signals than they once were.
