WKFN-AM 540 kHz 55 watts nightime?

Hello, Im Just NE. of Dayton,Ohio. long time AM band listener, Noticed on : WKFN-AM 540 kHz ESPN
Clarksville, Tennessee
"The Fan"
has been REALLY booming in here last 2 months or so from 30 minutes from before local sunset here, and stays STRONG all night long, with very little fade? Even gives WSM a run, for signal strength when at its strongest. Please tell me this isnt just on 55 nightime watts (4000 watts daytime) of power as they are listed at? Thanks Gregg M.

From the FCC data base:

http://transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/amq?list=0&facid=65202

there is nothing involving night tome coverage increase of the their class D status. There are not a lot of stations on 540 AM:

http://transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/a...&slat2=&NS=N&dlon2=&mlon2=&slon2=&EW=W&size=9

There have been occasions where less than 100 watts have carried a long long way but not every night. This could be an RF "hole" that nobody blasts at night. There is a Canadian AM CJSB:

http://transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/amq?list=0&facid=106058

with a night time pattern:

http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=CJSB&service=AM&status=F&hours=N

that could mess with WFKN's signal at night. But then a lot of Canadian AM's are moving to FM. I am sure some of the DXer's on this site:

http://radiodiscussions.com/forumdisplay.php?769-DX-and-Reception

that could figure out if what is happening is a Sky-wave miracle or a technical glitch on WFKN's part.

The number of DX reports of this station skyrocketed about the time they launched a FM translator on 100.7.

I'm too close to really know -- I'm about 20 miles away and the 55-watt signal was plenty strong with that low dial position.

Thanks ,SecondChoice,Doug, and Firepoint for the replys, I agree 540KC is weird MW slot. Fun to listen always, in the right conditions could pick up (barely) WWCS 540 AM, Canonsburg PA (5KW days) in the daytime here in Dayton, Now it dont make it, also could get KWMT 540 AM, Fort Dodge, IA (5KW days) at local sunset here, I could barely (with a NULL towards Clarksville TN)hear KWMT tonight, It Was All WFKN again tonight!! and they even have STRONG WKRC Cincinnati (55 miles out from me) at 550KC (5KW days, and 1KW nights) 10KC's away to contend with. If thats 55 watts (nighttime) for WKFN, then That Transmitter is doing a heck of a Job! (GE Superadio,or my Car,or Truck radio it dont Matter, same results!) Gregg M

I used to work for this station under its previous call letters, WDXN. Back then (early '90s), when I was too far away from Clarksville to pick up their signal, I typically heard a Mexican station at night.

I heard WKFN 540 in Akron Ohio last night. I received a clear identification. The distance is 439 miles. Are they really using only 55 watts at night?
