WKHB and WKFB: COL application

Bob Stevens has applied to the FCC for a COL change for WKHB from Irwin to Brentwood, which is literally on the other side of the world from where he is now.

He's also applied for a COL change for WKFB...from Jeannette to North Huntingdon. Not geographically extreme as KHB, but as I see it, not really necessary.

No power or antenna changes of any kind. Just the COL. This could get interesting. Any thoughts?

COL change for WKHB from Irwin to Brentwood,

I can't wait to hear the arguments over how the station has to serve the needs of the 10,446 people who live in Brentwood (as of the last census).

Considering that this station is adequately served by existing Pittsburgh stations.

Huh?!?

I meant that area (Brentwood). Sorry about that, Realist. Nursing a migraine today.

Oh, well that's different then.

I used to live in Brentwood. None of the Pittsburgh stations carried any of the Brentwood Spartans' football or basketball games. None of the Pittsburgh stations carried news about what the Brentwood Borough Council was up to. It seems to me that the only way Brentwood was "served" was with whatever was broadcast that was for the entire Greater Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area as a whole. There was nothing on any of the Pittsburgh stations that was of unique service to Brentwood Borough.

Yes, but do you honestly believe that a channel move of 620 from Irwin to Brentwood is going to improve that situation? I would say no...not by a long shot.

I do not believe that is a situation that needs to be improved.

Right there is my point. I don't possibly see what can be gained by moving this station to a city that doesn't need them.

I don't possibly see what can be gained by moving this station to a city that doesn't need them.

The people doing the moving stand to potentially gain a whopping big pile of money by going from a place where they reach a lower number of potential listeners to a place where they can reach a higher number of potential listeners. That strikes me as a nice gain.

After all, they're moving to a city that doesn't need them from a city that also doesn't need them. It isn't a pleasant thought to contemplate when one owns AM radio stations, but in this day and age, they aren't really civic necessities. Gaining or losing another AM station in town isn't going to matter much in the lives of the people of Irwin or Brentwood, nor any points in between.

Why does anyone even care about this anymore?

I'd venture that this is only about giving them the ability to move the studios toward the city. And once they have done that, they probably figure they can sell the stations for a little more money. Bob has patiently upgraded this combo, I think with the eventual intention of selling them (there has been a broker listing that pretty closely matches the description of these stations out there for YEARS). I just hope he gets to cash in before AM is totally obsolete.

It did matter to Greensburg, at one point. Radio does matter to those people, and Tony Renda's proving that right now with 107.1.

So did the Greengate Mall.

And the argument about city of license continues... unbelievable.

I bet Salem buys 620 within 12 months. If not, both stations get sold to goodradio.tv, the company that is buying almost 200 of the small-market Cc castoffs, including the Wheeling cluster. That's what I think......

Can you still call it a "City of License" if it's not a city, it's a borough?

Arguing about the COL for a station licensed to Braddock, New Kensington or McKeesport is one thing. But arguing about the COL of a station licensed to the COUNTY SEAT in ANOTHER county is an entirely different matter.

As for Salem buying 620, that's not going to happen. If my source is reliable, the asking price for 620 is in the lower seven figures. If Salem was to buy the station, it had better be cash-flowing to the point where it's a license to print money. Salem buys stations cheap to fix up with their own internal engineering staff to boost their worth. 620 is NOT going to go cheap.

That station has been on the so called market for some time now from a few sources. It would definably need to be a cash cow for anyone to consider taking it over. The paid by the hour pill doctor stuff is far from what it needs to be doing.

Also, don't look for salem to take it. That station will never be allowed to get the coverage it had when it was on the old Route 30 property years ago. Just not worth it now with the new rules.

Why? Do the people who live in the county seat have a greater need to hear infomercials for colon cleansers than other people?

But someone will buy it, once it can have studios located in Allegheny County... and Salem's track record elsewhere is sometimes odd. In Tampa they bought a reasonably successful Music of Your Life outlet (essentially the WJAS of the market) and flipped it to their fairly lame stable of conservative talkers (Reagan, Medved, etc). They also bought a near-dead daytimer in Sarasota for a simulcast partner. But on two better signals that reach from Tampa almost to Orlando (570 and 910) they simulcast their teaching-based programs. And if all else fails they have done sports in some markets (Cleveland and Jacksonville).

I'd also watch this goodradio.tv outfit that's buying lots of the small-market stuff from Clear Channel. They are a new company run by a former Pax Tv exec.

And I will bet you that those two Florida stations they bought at a very cheap price. That's Salem's thing: they buy fixer-upper stations with dumpish facilities that also happen to have powerful signals. It's not Stu's thing to overpay.
