WKII Port Charlotte 1070 OLDIES????

A smart move considering that Venice,Englewood, North Port and Port Charlotte will soon be overrun with "Baby Boomers" I just hope that Clear Channel sticks to the format for a while, remember when WAMR was in Venice and was Oldies?? (Going back about 15 years ago) anyhow, when Jacor aquired that station and then CC shortly after, the format was changes to the "Sports Animal" I'm just wondering if C.C. plans to keep WKII "Oldies" or will it become "Sports Animal II"??? WKII has the potential to make TONS of money with this format, just as long as the Music Dir. Knows his shit and dosen't start morphing into Classic Rock songs like "Oldies" 108 does in Sarasota. Anything by Heart, Styx, Journey or Boston is CLASSIC ROCK! hence, it don't sound good next to Unchained Melody or Baby Love. A station can't do that unless it's name is BOB!(102.9) One more thing, I hope WKII procures a morning man that is among the living, somebody that sounds like Wolfman Jack, Lee Allan, Dick Clark, Alan Freed or Adrian Cronauer

I think WKII is one of the few Clear Channel stations that is actually staffed 24/7. I recall hearing a DJ reading a missing person alert live on WKII - in the 2 AM hour. And yes, this was well after CC began their reputation as "Crap Channel"...

Oldies 1070...

As long as Canada Calling comes back in November the Canadians don't care what format the station runs.

WKII hasn't been live the last few weeks (I just starting listening during the last month); there did have a morning guy on until either 10 or 11am and he appeared to be live and would do countdowns from various years in the 1960's and 1970's, but apparently he was let go last week (I'm thinking his air name may have been Dave Scott, not sure);..........but, when I listened on and half from about 9:50 this morning to around 11:20 this morning, it was automation; the music was a good variety from the 19660's and 1960's; the oldest song I heard was "Hats Off to Larry" the voice track person or automated voice---whatever indicated that song was from 1961; also heard the Supremes, ABBA, Simon and Garfunkle, Grand Funk and Jefferson Starship.

Last week, late morning and early afternoon, WKII was playing the same exact music as 1320 and 1450 w/o the "Dove" liners.

It was during Jefferson Starship's "Miracle" that halfway through the song, it stopped and was interrupted by a promotional liner and then another song came on; so that gave me a big clue that what I was listening to was not live(or someone has fallen asleep!); and the fact I didn't hear any current temperatures or time checks.

Again, the variety of music from the 1960's and 1970's is good; but of course at night, reception is probably only possible in Charlotte Harbour, Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda; south Venice, Englewood and maybe even North Port are probably out of luck at night, with the pattern change and reduced power.

Their previous format was the adult standards format provided by Dial Global, run by the Dove twins, unfortunately. The Dove Twins were better when they rolled their own.

The morning man let go was Scott Dayton, who's only failing was a seemingly negative attitude. His variety of music was astonishing!

WKII as Oldies 1070 has a looooong way to go to be worth listening to. Their music is very downtempo, and seems to be mid-70's based. A little chancey to use the liner "back on AM where they belong" for music after 1975 or so... They seem to be totally voice tracked, as there are no time checks, nor any weather. Very, very generic sounding. If they could replicate in their own way the "Real Oldies" format once on in Cincinatti, they would be very entertaining to listen to. Even something more along the lines of Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel would be nice. But no, what do we get? The same 500 oldies already beat to death on 92.5.

Regarding their power, they are non-directional with 1800 watts day and 233 watts night, and an amazing signal for such little power. Now if they could only find some decent programming. Mark my words, what they have now will not work.

What a terrible mistake clear channel has made in my humble opinion! 1070 now advertises 'oldies on AM where they should be', but they are playing songs that were popular on FM!. The station had a true DJ old song personality and tune
expert that they let go, how foolish! The recordings now aired are songs that can be heard anywhere and are played everywhere. Scott Dayton played real oldies that in their time where played on AM. His format included a telephone request line that I called many times and my selections where always aired promptly. One outstanding feature that was most entertaining was the fact that you would hear obscure songs that were not necesarily 'top 100', but when you heard them, they surely jogged your memory.
Don't bother to turn this station on anymore, it's boring!

oldiesed

I have to agree with most of oldiesed's post. The majority of WKII's day seems to be voice tracked, and their afternoon voice has an extremely annoying voice. And... he loves to talk. Bad combination.
Their music is more uptempo than at first but there is nothing to set it apart from the FM oldies station in Ft. Myers.

The point about returning the oldies to AM where they belong would make more sense if they weren't playing so much mid-late 70's stuff. Most markets had an FM Top-40 by then.

Oh well. It's Clear Channel. What do you expect. The only decent AM oldies station Clear Channel had was 1530 in Cincinatti and they killed it.

After listening to WKII for a week or two now, I have to hang my head! The Voice tracking SUX and the music SUX! The person who is programming the music for this station dosen't know his/her ass from a hole in the ground! and has no clue what "Oldies" is! HIRE SOMEBODY FOR A PD/MD THAT KNOWS THE MUSIC!! Find an old musician that knows this shit and not some geek that spends his free time out playing golf! The music is SO BAD on WKII, it sounds like one of the talk guys is programming it. WKII 1070 "Oldies AM" GREAT IDEA.....just get your shit together

From the people that brought you "The Sports Animal," it's "The Music Mongoose..."

It is painfully obvious that whomever is "programming" WKII has no clue as to the demographics that would listen to a music AM, no clue as to the demographics in SW FL, and absolutely no clue about oldies. James Taylor A-Z is not oldies, unless you're an AC station. The vast majority of WKII's music is mid-late 70's based, past the time of AM Top-40 dominance. And, as I stated in an earlier post, it is very AC based, not Top-40. There is little attention paid to music flow. They need to carefully set the tempo settings in their Selector database.
Also, oddly, there is almost no Motown or Beatles, and about two pre-Beatles oldies a day, played out of the blue.
A major, major disappointment.

I keep sampling this station, hoping they'll prove me wrong. Not yet. I heard the album version of "(Don't Fear) The Reaper". Hello! The AM stations played the single edit!! And "Layla" is a questionable Top-40 oldie that of course has absolute value as a classic rock song. So, what do I hear? The 7 minute version, not the single (AM radio) version.
They are hopeless. Guess it's time to speculate what format WKII will have next book.

Classic rock, perhaps? Have they played Led Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker" and "Living Loving Maid" back-to-back yet?

Have to say, they have slightly improved. The best jock WKII has is one who bills himself as "The Golden Hippo". I would assume he is somewhat porcine... At least he plays actual AM oldies, like 50's and pre-Beatle 60's. I could beef about how he puts his sets together, but he's doing OK.
However... What is up with the weekends?? Ms. Generic Break is on Saturday afternoons, and it's 95% 70's, 5% 60's and that's it. She has to be a voice tracker...
Also, when "Hot Rod Todd" is doing remotes on the weekends, he sounds a lot better than he does when he's on during the week! Why? He's not talking a mile a minute, and this has the added benefit of making his voice sound a bit lower...
My wish? Other than to program WKII, would be for the GH to give the other jocks music lessons. Also, I have a great idea for their jingles, which need help. But... they'll have to ask me to get the handy tip!!!
Enough. (Climbs off soapbox)

Sorry to see that this topic has apparently dried up. I continue to "monitor" the WKII situation with a painful chuckle.

Scott Dayton
