WKIT/WZON

Does anyone know how long Stephen King has owned these stations? Just curious.

It kinda looks like he may have purchased it in 1990 because the same guy who's PD of it was who kicked off its current format that year.

i wanna say 1988/1989....WKIT might have still been on 100.9 but i'm pretty sure the WGUy calls were gone on the FM by the time King got a hold of the station

as for WZON, I think '93 is when it flipped to sports

Mr. King also owns WDME 103.1FM Dover-Foxcroft. ("The Woods of Maine") He has owned it for about 7 or 8 years..I believe it is also run out of the WKIT/WZON complex..There is a sign for all three stations in front of the studios on Broadway, Bangor.. And BTW, if you arein the area check out the huge 620 AM tower. One of the tallest structures in Bangor.

WGUY FM became WKIT somewhere around July of 1987, and moved from 100.9 to 100.3 at that time. It was owned by Sunspot Broadcasting during this period, and the studios were located in the Brewer Shopping Center. The WGUY call letters were picked up by WLKN in Lincoln, which went on to become WHMX. Sunspot sold WKIT to H&L Broadcasting (not sure of the date) who moved the studios to first the Perry Road in Bangor then to the Pearle Building on Harlow Street in Bangor. Stephen King's Zone Corporation bought WKIT in September of 1995 and moved it to brand new studios on Broadway. I don't have exact dates for Zone's acquisition of WZON or WDME. All three operations are located in the studios on Broadway.

I believe the Kings bought WZON back in the early 80's.

I think the Kings bought ZON twice. Once in the 80s, then sold it and reacquired it in the 90s. I'm not 100% sure of this, but I think they bought it specifically to have a place where they could hear Red Sox games.

I worked for WKIT, and WNSW AM 1200 in 1993, and at the time it was owned by H & L broadcasting. The sale had to be after I left in 1994.

That kinda makes sense because it would seem Mr. King was still very busy writing and approving screenplays late 80s to early 90s to have been working out station deals and such.

Just a hunch though.
