WKIX

Nice to hear the oldies on 850, interspersed with some classic Pams jingles. The variety is astonishing... "Sunday Morning Coming Down" by Johnny Cash, "Mack the Knife" by Louis Armstrong, and my favorite Connie Francis tune, "Hollywood"! (just to name a few)
And that signal... I drove from Bedford, VA to within sight of Charlotte and 850 was coming in fine the entire way. Don't know how long it'll last, but it sure sounds great.

Well, being an old employee of Southern Broadcasting, I am not sure that they can run those jingles without re-licensing! My co-hort from Tampa, Randy should be able to answer the question.

About the "Channel 85" tag: UHF TV stations originally had channels 14-83. I suppose that AM stations at 840 kc/s (I'm that old!) or higher could have called themselves Channel 84, Channel 92, Channel 109, etc. Did any other station do so? or was WKIX unique with the Channel xx tag?

WSPF Hickory, 1000khz, was called "channel 1 radio" if i remember correctly.

I *think* this started with Chuck Blore at KFWB, Los Angeles. It was mostly an early '60s thing and TV was the catalyst... he called the station Color Radio, KFWB and Channel 98, KFWB. TV was taking over and color television was new and cool, so KFWB got that jet set thing going.

Many, many Top 40 stations used "Channel ??", even if the number was too high to mirror a TV channel (and remember, UHF channels 14-83 weren't cool at all at that time. Most TVs didn't even have UHF tuners and many markets had no UHF TV stations at all). On the radio, though, there were plenty of Channel whatevers, many with numbers higher than 83... 145s, 126s, etc.

Aside from KFWB, many well known stations across the U.S. used the "Channel" positioner... KJR was Channel 95, WLCY was Channel 138, KDWB was Channel 63, WIBG was Channel 99, KGB was Channel 136, WAPE was Channel 69, KEWB was Channel 91, etc.

WLOF.. We Love Orlando Florida.. Channel 95

WLS worlds largest store sears
WDBO way down by orlando
WSB way south brother
WPTF we protect the family durham life insurance
just some more

Actually, WSB (Atlanta) stands for "Welcome South Brother". WAGA-Atlanta, GA. WGHP-Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point. WGOG (Wahalla, SC)- Goddess Of The Gods.

I don't know what happened on Friday. The last time I was in the areas where I was, I heard WKIX and liked it. I turned off my air condtioning and was away from power lines, but still nothing. And the car started getting hot so I turned the air conditioning back on.

In the car my father had in 1995, WKIX was just fine even in Winston-Salem. Okay, it was WYLT, but still ...

I don't think WKIX (850AM) was ever WYLT. That was the FM (96.1) which had previously been WYYD. Both, Wasn't WYLT gone by then?

I'm not sure how many folks on here are old enough to remember when WPET AM 950 in Greensboro was Top Forty. They were also known as Channel 95. WKIX and WPET to the best of my memory were the only 2 stations locally that used the "channel' identification. Possibly Big WAYS in Charlotte also used it. I think I may have some old Big WAYS Pams jingles using "channel 61".

I've been around a hellava long time going back to the Brennen Era and I don't ever recall WAPE using Channel 69????? And yep, I'm an old "Goat" I knew Marconi!!! BIGAPE

I grew up in Brennan-land (WVOK/WBAM), and I'm 99.9% certain that they never used "Channel XX" tag lines.

When Jim Shirah was the Program Director, (1967 to 1970), he bought the first jingles the station ever had. I don't know the names/numbers of the packages, but one of their primary jingles used the wording, "Channel 69, WAPE".

The 850 AM dial position was WYLT for a fairly brief period, from 1994-95. When the former "Y-96" WYLT 96.1 FM became "Kix 96.1", the WYLT call letters moved over to the then-popular standards format which became "Lite 85". In 1995, they ditched the standards, became WRBZ "850 the Buzz" and began a slow transition to hot talk and finally the sports format that they aired until last November, when the WRBZ programming was split between WCMC and WDNC, the latter of which assumed the Buzz handle, and 850 begam making the transition back to WKIX. (There's a post somewhere on this board detailing how many dial positions have had the WKIX call letters)

I may have to back up and say maybe that was true when Jim came from WIRK...I just don't remember PAMS having that series.. I remember we had the Drake Jingles and of course we stole the APE CALL from the record Nervous Norville Had.. I understand WAPE 95.1 is still using that at the top of the area!
