WKIX

"Gee, maybe this is some form of discrimination against southern radio stations. After all if KDKA, WBZ, and WOWO (can you still pick up WOWO at night?), and all are hundreds of miles North and Northwest, its just logical you should be able to pick up WKIX which is only 30 miles or less from the beautiful village of Chapel Hill. This apparently has to be something the Bush administration thought up to punish North Carolina for participating in the Civil War. I know it can't have anything to do with all of those towers at the WKIX transmitter site. And this also gives credence to the term DA, and I don't mean directional antenna. But it is time for change and since Obama carried NC, I'm sure he will make things right and you should be able to listen to the Big 85 at night soon."


So how would you explain the monster signals of WBT Charlotte, WSB Atlanta, WSM Nashville. That was pretty stupid.
 
??? I reckon it doesn't have anything to do with most of those stations having 50,000 watts Clear Channel either!

Sorry you don't have a sense of humor. I think the original poster is a student at Duke and they didn't mention any of the high powered stations in the south. I'm surprised anyone attending Duke is even aware of AM radio. And I'm sure mentioning Class 1-A 50,000 watt clear channel stations would only confuse our young friend at Duke. He/she would probably think we're referring to the corporation with the same name. Guys you're taking this all too seriously.
 
Yeah, it was obviously a joke.
Bush never had anything against the South.
That goes back to FDR. He kept the South from getting the bigwatt stations.

Thanks for the compliment, I wish I was a student at Duke. I work in Duke Hospital.
The stations I mentioned were stations I could receive while attending school in the mountains of Western Pennsylvania, and I can still hear them here. Believe it or not, I am still a "fan" of AM radio. I am really enjoy 850 WXIX. (not a plug for the station!) Although I do highly recommend it. I used to listen to 680, but we all know the story there.

I'm totally enjoying WKIX. The quality on my radios is horrible, but then I happened to remember my Sony SRF-A100 stereo wideband radio that hasn't been used in a few years. I just connected it to my monitoring system. Pat Patterson never sounded so good, even tracked. Charlie Brown is next.

If I can find a decent one, I may buy an FM transmitter to broadcast the SRF-A100 signal throughout the house. My wife and I are enjoying the music, while it lasts.

Are there any decent AM radios available now? The CCRadio models appear to be optimized for voice (narrow band). The Sony SRF-A300 is supposedly available from Japan with Japanese labels, but at least one person who bought one reports that it is quite narrow band.

Interesting question. You might be able to find a "boat anchor" from the 1950s or 1960s that has a wideband filter for AM.

When is WKIX-AM Channel 85 Oldies going to get a website?

With the thread up and running about WKIX and their website...for all the oldtimers who used to listen to or work for WKIX in the 60's and 70's, try www.wkixrewound.com. A fun site with clips of old radio shows, KIX Countdowns, profiles of airstaff from the past,and other things from the good ol' days. Great stuff! It's a Blast from the Past. Stax of Wax and plenty of Platter Chatter from the Old Grooveyard! Some of us go back a ways.

When it snows, would you like them to come by and also scrape your driveway while they're tickling your ears?

It's a station that targets 55+ listeners in Raleigh-Durham. People who still know how to operate an AM radio. There's no money in websites and streaming for a station that targets those demos.

Are you going to drive from W-S to Raleigh to buy a hearing aid, some bagels, or a Buick.
 
:eek: They have BUICKS in Raleigh???  Wow, I HAVE been away a while!  Is WKIX-FM still on? How about that rockin' WQDR? DO they still exist?  (Please don't answer these, I'm just kiddin' around!)  I added that disclaimer for those who use this board but forgot their sense of humor.
