WKIZ Key West Florida - Deleted

i remember WKIZ 1500 AM stereo... Weak signal reaching Havana mainly the coast...with the oldies format and live djs. It could be heard during daytime... Sometimes... I was fan of the sister station WFYN-WEOW /92.5. As I commented here years ago that one reached Havana rather good.
I am still looking for the gingles of these stations as well WKWF. I have of WFYN some recording. If someone is interested let me know.

Radio Marti is sharply directional south from Marathon pointed at Havana. You are probably hearing Radio Rebelde which the Cuban government was running at a pretty high power to jam Marti.

Actually, it is not really "sharply" directional but, instead has a pattern that is about 120° wide aimed at as much of the 800 mile long island that is Cuba. That is how it was originally designed in documents I was shown when I did some work for the agency earlier in their history.
 
I have put some WFYN WEOW 92.5 fm KEY WEST jingles FROM THE 80s in SoundCloud site.
If you have some more let me know. Also from WKIZ AM 1500 I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THEM. You can find some WKIZ AM recordings in SoundCloud too

The new format for WKWF is Jazz Standards. They have a new website, but the streaming wasn't working. There is a section on the site that gives an interesting historical rundown about WKWF and it's owner.

Yup, two FMs in the keys (96.9/102.5) are filling the news/talk void since WFFG has been silent.

It's a national network. I don't know that there's a "main frequency". 640 (at least the one we hear in the US) is Radio Progreso. The historic CMQ call letters likely have not been uttered on that or any other Progreso frequency since 1959. ALL of the Cuban stations are run by the government
 
As of today WKWF does not put a AM signal into the West coast of Florida from Marco Island North. It had been playing music from the 40's and 50's for the past months. Don't know about the translator on FM
 
Radio Bob- thank you for the observation. Perhaps you should contact them. If there is a technical issue it can probably be resolved without drama. I think their format choice is very nice and wish them well.

Radio Rebelde main studios are in the old CMQ building in Havana. Indeed it is a network of several frequencies some of them just to delete anticastro radios from Miami like 710khz and 670khz... But they have moved the stations from frequencies in the last years.

On AM alone, there are 92 Radio Rebelde transmiters across the Island and in every center of population. Therre are about 35 FM repeaters, too.

The originating station for Rebelde is on 670 in metro Habana.

Many of the smaller AMs were moved around the dial and the nation a few years back when the Chinese redesigned the whole AM and FM system and employed many shared diplexed or triplexed transmitter sites for AM and shared towers for FM.

Would I be wrong in thinking the national Cuban networks would be consolidated in the same place in Havana?

Nope. All radio and TV is operated by a single government division. The only reason to have any operations separated would be lack of space in a particular building.

There are also a number of regional networks as well as quite a few local stations.

In many of the coastal areas, it does get through as the power towards Cuba is the equivalent of almost 500,000 watts.
 
And don't forget , Radio Martí is also on shortwave from Greenville, North Carolina. However, the Office of Cuban Broadcasting (OCB) turns off the shortwave transmitters for the overnight hours, not just the Monday-morning maintenance window as was before. If I were a dissident, I would be listening late at night... the Miami-based OCB bureaucrats have not thought through this obvious void...

Marti is only off air for about 6 hours 04-10UTC

Cuba still jams Marti.. but funny, they dont keep up with martis schedule.. and have been known to jam nothing.. and in some cases, jam thewmselves
