WKJK

Since I hear mostly paid programs on WKJK, except for a few popular talk show like Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, and Gary Sullivan, I posed the question to Tom Dorsey, Radio/TV Critic of the Courier-Journal. I asked him to answer the reason WKJK refuses to pick up more of the popular syndicated talk programs like Bill O'Reilly, Mike Savage, Neil Boortz, Mike Reagan, Kim Commando or Bob Brinker. He answered most of WKJK's programs are paid programs and programs like O'Reilly are too expensive.

However, it seems uncanny that things are different with the two Clear Channel talk stations in Cincinnati. In Cincinnati, WLW-AM is similar to WHAS-AM in Louisville as a Full Service format and WKRC-AM is the Talk Station, supposedly like WKJK. However, WKRC-AM manages to avoid the paid programming technique and airs Talk programming around the clock including Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mike Savage and George Noory. They use to carry Glenn Beck. Currently, they have Laura Ingraham in Beck's old time slot. Basically, WLW keeps the talk local while WKRC takes care of the syndication shows and they both seem to do well in Cincinnati.

Mike what do you mean keep it from Salem? They don't need it. They have WGTK, which has the 2nd strongest signal at night in Louisville. I would like to see WGTK do at least one local program, except carry the Bats games. They are currently #14 in the rankings, which isn't bad, but I still think they could get higher. What is yalls opinion of WGTK???

If CC didnt Have Hannity on KJK. Salem would probly have it on GTK thats a clear obivious. CC wants the big Syndie Shows if they dont already own them on their stations if at all Possible. I Remember someone in Cincy having Hannity but KRC Took Hannity as soon as they possibly could from the other station in cincy

As far as my opinion goes, I listen to WGTK-AM and WHAS-AM the most in Louisville. I do like WGTK's Talk format. They seem to discuss a wide range of vital issues from current news to morals. I have received many great insights listening especially to Bill Bennett and Dennis Prager. There seems to be an overall congenial perspective among all the hostson WGTK. Therefore, the listener knows what to expect when tuning into AM 970 while the lineup on WHAS is a mixture of a conservative Rush Limbaugh, the more Libertarians Joe Elliot and Francene, and the conspiracy theorist George Noory. However, I do respect the great team and hard work at WHAS-AM and I listen to them as well. But, their sister station,WKJK-AM, contains too much variety for me to digest.

I only have two problems with WGTK, which I believe one will be fixed within the next few months. One problem is concerning their weekday afternoon lineup. Currently, they only carry the first two hours of Dennis Prager from noon-2pm, then the first two hours of Dave Ramsey from 2-4pm and then we lose the first hour of Mike Medved and he is joined in progress from 4-6pm. Of course, during the summer months, most of Hugh Hewitt is pre-empted by Louisville Bats baseball. However, from what I heard a few weeks ago, Dave Ramsey will be leaving Salem radio stations and WGTK's contract with the Louisville Bats expires after this season. I understand that Salem does not want to renew the Bats' contract due to conflict with regular programming and the lack of Bats radio listenership. If Dave Ramsey and the Bats leave, then WGTK's format should flow smoothly. It is a little frustrated to hear Dennis Prager promote his 3rd hour guest, which at many times I had a desire to hear, and we get Dave Ramsey instead of Prager's 3rd hour.

Also, as far as the weekend, it would be nice if WGTK can add some more shows. It seems like repeats of Dennis Prager, Hugh Hewitt and Mike Gallagher are dominating the weekend schedule. Other Salem stations are carrying addition programming on the weekends and some of those shows are local. These are my only issues with WGTK. They are definitely more candid than the lineup on WKJK-AM and lately I have been finding my ears glued more to Bill Bennett, Laura Ingraham and Dennis Prager than Tony Cruise, Francene and Rush on WHAS.

I personally hate to see Dave Ramsey leave. His show is compelling and a nice change of pace from paranoid angry white men! AM radio needs more compelling hosts (like Bill Handel and Phil Hendrie) who can offer more than Hillary-bashing :D

Man I couldn't agree more!!! I love Ramsey, even though if you are a faithful listener you kind of hear the same thing over and over again. I wonder what WGTK will put in it's place? And if WKJK will air him live?

WGTK will probably carry all 3 hours of the Dennis Prager Show from Noon-3pm followed by the full 3 hours of Mike Medved from 3pm-6pm. WGTK is owned by Salem Communications. Dennis Prager and Mike Medved are both Salem produced shows while Dave Ramsey is not a product of Salem. As far as WKJK carrying Dave Ramsey live, I seriously doubt it since that will conflict with Sean Hannity's live slot from 3pm-6pm. In Cincinnati, Dave Ramsey was moved from a live slot on former Salem station WBOB-AM 1160 to a delayed evening slot on Clear Channel's WKRC-AM 550. WKJK may be willing to delay it in the early evenings slot from 7pm-10pm depending on how much Dave is willing to pay. Currently, WKJK carries paid programming during that time period. It seems that there is little hope for a new home for Dave Ramsey unless Cox decides to do a Talk format on 103.9, Radio-One decides to do Talk on 104.3 or Cumulus airs it on WAVG-AM 1450, which all seems unlikely. The best option is for a negotiation to occur between Dave Ramsey and Salem so the program can air live on either WFIA-FM 94.7 or WFIA-AM 900. However, it looks like the Dave Ramsey and Salem relationship has vanished.

Any chance that WJIE might pick up Dave Ramsey? They have already deviated from a 24/7 music format (Focus on the Family, Evangel Presents, etc.), so this wouldn't be that much of a stretch for them.

According to one of the management staff at WJIE, they want to focus WJIE as a music station because their listeners prefer music over talk programming. Previous ministry programs have lacked support on WJIE except for the few they air in the latter part of the evenings. Therefore, they have limited the teaching programs to only those with good listener support like Focus on the Family, Charles Stanley and Joyce Meyers. Of course, they air "Evangel Presents" because it is a production from the owners of the station.

WJIE's slogan has changed from "Today's Christian Radio" to "Today's Best Christian Music." The only time they stop the music is for about 90 minutes at 10pm and a few hours on Sunday morning. Dave Ramsey would probably draw new listeners to WJIE during his time slot. However, there is a good that such a program would move some loyal-supported listeners away from WJIE, especially since there are other choices in the market for Christian AC music. Also, AC listeners, Christian and mainstream, desires a station that plays mostly music with fewer interruptions during the 9-5 working hours.

Now that's balance...not!

I personally love Ramsey in that time slot. The word is Salem asked Ramsey to start paying b/c he's always promoting his own stuff, and Ramsey wouldn't do it. Which is weird, b/c I didn't know hosts got to be on the air for free.

ramsey moves to WKJK in Aug
I guess Glenn Beck is out since WKJK is moving the father and daughter team of "Big Talk on Small Business" in Glenn Beck's slot from 9am-12pm. Dave Ramsey will take the noon-3pm slot.
