WKKV V100 Milwaukee

I know thers a Wisconsin board, but seems like the site is overall biased when it comes to urban, id rather post on the format boards for better interaction.

Anyways, Im so happy at the fall of V100 because I saw it coming. They've been doing everything wrong for years since Bailey Coleman was appointed to PD. Its time for a major shake up. From the early 2000s, WMIL and WKKV were usually tied back and forth in top ratings in the 414. Country vs Urban. Can't get any more classic than that!

With Doc Love as APD/MD and eventually succeeding Jamillah Muhamad as PD, the station had a strong Urban/Crunk sound, tite mixshows nightly and on the weekends. Numbers were extremely strong, trumping WXSS Kiss1037 in each book. Doc Love expanded the promotions budget and got them great vehicles and a trailer. There was a strong street presence.

Drastic changes, from losing the Doug Banks show and switching to the ever stupid decision of Urban AC morning show Sleepy Steve for AM drive, Jam 4 Peace going to the end of summer instead of the beginning of summer, to a generalized UAC playlist, cutting the night shift from 6-10 to 6-9 and then starting the Quiet Storm one hour earlier at 9, the station should have just became Urban AC period and dropped all hip hop.

Ratings are in the gutter, the lowest they've ever been! Its time for a new staff, a new focus, a new direction, a new brain. Less R&B worked for WKKV. The early 2000 numbers proved it. With WJMR skewing to more Jammin Oldies and the new WNOV simlucast as R&B, the market is in DIRE need of a true Urban. I would LOVE to see a competitor start up, if not with a local morning show, at least Rickey, Russ.

I've NEVER seen so much high ratings for WXSS, 3rd in 12+ and WKKV is in the gutter. SHOCKING. "V100.7 Blazin' R&B."

What can Clear Channel do at this point? They've already pulled the plug on WPHR-FM/Syracuse this evening (January 2nd, 2011) for a simulcast of AM sister WSYR, demoting the format to the AM side of what used to be WHEN. One gets the feeling that somewhere down the line that WKKV will follow in the footsteps of WMIB/Miami and KATZ/St. Louis. And thats a new format....other than Urban...

CC has killed this station slowly over the years. When I was in Milwaukee about a year ago, the whole vibe of the station is sleepy and automated-sounding. Reggie Brown is past his time. Steve Harvey doesn't fit the format. The night time show is suspect. Taped slow jams show... Need I say more? The only bright spots I can see are Doc B and Mike Love. The station has no identity.

Its A Typical Clear Channel Urban especially its the only hip-hop radio station in Milwaukee. There is no competition so they feel like they should be a cookie cutter station. i do feel a format change will come eventually especially if their just letting the ratings go down giving them a reason to switch formats later.

Start with the name. How many hip hop stations named "V"? I think this station is trying to be a little of urban and urban ac.

I remember back in the mid '90s when V100 had a heavy R&B influence under PD Brian Anthony. Although I liked their sound back then because it had a good variety of R&B that ordinarily would not have gotten much play on Milwaukee radio, the ratings were sliding. Hot 102 at the time became heavy on the hip hop and began to overtake V100. Then one day I woke up and V100 was no longer R&B heavy, but became heavy on the hip hop under Tony Fields. I can see a similar scenario playing out here as Kiss dominates them in ratings while V100 is sleepy. A change is needed to resurrect the station.

Well, V-103 in Atlanta is a major urban station and has been for nearly 35 years. ;D

However, I understand what you are implying. V-100.7 Jams in Milwaukee is an urban contemporary rather than mainstream urban, but under Clear Channel that usually signifies mediocrity. KMEL is the only urban contemporary formatted station under CC ownership that actually is well programmed station, all local personalities on air, AND includes local artists in regular song rotations.

Im happy I have alot of support on this :D

Yeah, you do. The ONLY CC-owned urban I give a pass to is KMEL. The rest are mediocre and poorly programmed. I've seen college stations like WNSB in Norfolk better programmed than most CC owned urbans.

Forgot about V103, but isn't that a heavily dayparted station?

It's very dayparted. Unlike most dayparted urban contemporary stations of its caliber, it actually gives its competition a run for its money by breaking local hip-hop artists and very good mix DJs.

I don't think V100 is that bad. The ratings dipped in response to the new arbitron system reaching Milwaukee, they will probably recover as they have for WUSL and WGCI. WNOV is running Rickey Smiley right now.

Ah the V name has been since the beginning. Can't really knock that. Its just been programmed much better previously, remember used to be in the top 2-3 slots constantly.

And i think its true, I think CC wants another station to come in and rip them apart so V100 can change formats, never really thought of that. I'm used to "heritage" stations competing, but they really been throwin the towel in alot latetly. Don't need to mention that Milwaukee raised up from Market 31 to 38 in the last 10 yrs too.

plain and simple CC sucks when it comes to urban radio lol

Urban AC WJMR also took a hit when the PPMs hit Milwaukee in 2010. Hopefully both stations will recover. I actually like the fact that V100 has some veteran DJs and some heritage. I would agree that the automated programming isn't cool.

Milwaukee is actually a very competitive market for urban radio. WNOV is urban AC during the day with more hip hop at night and Ricky Smiley in the morning. The FM signal is pretty weak but the the AM is strong. WMCS always sounds good with alot of heritage and WJMR has a lot of veteran DJs too and some older hip hop programming on the weekend evenings. WGLB-AM is gospel.

It seems like that's already starting to happen. Over the last week or so they've been playing the kind of hip hop tracks that they probably would've ignored if they came out last year (Fabolous - You Be Killin Em, Lil Wayne - 6 Foot 7 Foot, Birdman - Fire Flame, Soulja Boy - Speakers Going Hammer)

It sounds like they're feeling the heat

Too little too late?

I think it might be. I have a feeling this station is going to flip to Rhythmic pretty soon

If they continue to fall in the next three books i think a flip will definitely happen. Do V100 even have mix shows on weekends?

The only one they have is The Baka Boyz Hip Hop Master Mix (nationally syndicated), which airs Friday nights from 10PM to 1AM.

I think they REALLY need a local mixshow on Saturday nights....something similar to what they had in the late 90s The Basement Brothers.

The main problem is this.....V100 is more R&B than hip hop. And over the last year, R&B has been dominated by Urban AC type of artists (Monica, Jazmine Sullivan, Fantasia, Alicia Keys, Maxwell, etc). That doesn't appeal to the demographic they should be going after to compete with KISS
