WKLB and Local Artists?

Hey Guys. In my last post I was asking about a local artist, Kiley Evans. I’ve been told she’s from Marshfield. Her track Johnny Depp is in rotation on WCTK in RI and I’ve also heard it quite a bit on WATD in Marshfield. I’ve been sort of following her on the air and online, and no music expert, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see her hit the national seen any day now. The song sounds like a hit to me. I called WKLB during the Country Café to request it and they told me they’ve heard of the song but are unable to play it. I wonder why WKLB hasn’t jumped on this yet? You’d think with artists like Jo Dee Messina & Ayla Brown putting Boston on the country music map it would be great PR for them to take someone like this under their wing before they "make it big". There doesn’t seem to be a ton of local country talent in this area right now. Has anyone else heard the track?

According to mediabase Kiley Evans "Johnny Depp" has not been played on WCTK during 2011 so stating that this song is rotation (Min of 5 spins per week) is incorrect. WATD-FM is not a monitored station so I have no accurate measurement of airplay. However I did find the song on youtube as well as an undated interview with the CTK night jock....

When JoDee Messina started to get Boston Airplay in 1995 she had a record deal unlike Kiley Evans or for that matter Ayla Brown who is apparently currently shopping herself around Nashville. It is unfair to make a blanket statement that WKLB isn't playing "Johnny Depp" because Greater Media owns the station. I see no justication to play the song! You won't hurt your station by not playing a song... Especially an unknown song! WKLB is in the Radio business not the record business. It's not their job to break new artists otherwise their ascap/bmi and streaming fees would be alot lower. Sorry but that's reality.

Judgment of a song is purely subjective but for whatever my opinion is worth here goes: Kiley's voice is pretty good.... Although the vocals were hard to understand during parts of the song due to bad mixing.... There seems to be too much compression on the instrumentation. Also the lyrics aren't strong for a country tune. I think they were going for a Rockin' version of Taylor Swifts debut single "Tim McGraw". They missed the mark... Swifts tune was a very simple arrangement, The lyrics were a sentinmental and innocent look back on 1st love while listening to country music in a old pickup while driving around in the country.... Evans tune was about raging hormones... "Yeah I can't wait to get to know ya... A modern day John Travolta... Just like Johnny Depp" There's not much country going on in this song. Kiley Evans needs country material a new producer and strong promotion. And with all that, it's still a crap shoot.

I've heard it. Definitely light years away from the average local artist recording that I'm used to hearing. I think she has real raw talent and wouldn't be surprised to see her in Nashville soon. Just my opinion...
