WKLS-FM lives again... sort of.

After 20 years of programming to soccer moms I finally talked a station owner into letting me do a Rock station 4 years. I built the station in a large way based on what I remembered from my trips into Atlanta listening to 96 Rock. When CC dumped the rock format for auto tuned teens and let the call letters slide away I couldn't resist. As of October 1st it is official that Rock 105.9 in Gadsden, Alabama is now WKLS-FM. I don't have the signal of the original and I sure don't have their resources but at least the call letters will live on and hopefully they'll inspire me every day to do my my best to live up to that incredible heritage. If anybody cares to sample the new WKLS we are online at www.rock1059.net and if you are in North West Georgia you can hear us in the Rome area. Rock on and thanks to everybody that played a part in the long rock history at the original WKLS. You inspired a bunch of us and this station would probably still be country if it weren't for you.

I see the station has a construction permit to move the transmitter to the mountain top just outside of Gadsden. Is this still the plan? You will lose the Rome coverage, but gain all of the Gadsden coverage if the construction permit is built out.

As far as I know that's still the plan but I expected it to be done a year ago so at this point I'm just working with what I've got and trying not to worry about what's not in my hands. With the success we've had so far in Gadsden and Anniston he may think we don't need the extra coverage. I don't know.

I dunno, I'd still build the CP if I were you. Yes, you've had good success so far, but you'd likely have much more with a better signal upgrade. You'd be surprised how much a bigger signal would improve things for you. Radio scans will stop on your signal instead of passing it up. You'd have better penetration through buildings as well. You'd end up with one of the better signals in Gadsden, and that's attractive to advertisers. I know you'll lose Rome in your coverage, but your target market is Gadsden/Anniston area so improving coverage that much there will benefit you greatly. You could always get a translator in Rome if you really didn't want to lose coverage there completely.
