WKLU Changes?

forgive me if I've missed any previous discussion on this (I searched, but only found old topics) ... but is WKLU about to change formats or make some other adjustment to justify the current ads their running? It seems to me that they've been playing more 80's pop than they used to, but I assume they've done that to counter the track and jack.

I did notice this weekend that they had liners claiming that they "play everything. (except Funky Cold Medina)" What this means, I don't know, because if they play everything, when do I hear Classical, or Country, or Rap?

They've also been running a promo stating something to the effect of how they're about change the face of radio in Indy as we know it. Seems like they have adjusted their music a bit, though...maybe some dayparting to some extent.

They've been tweaking their music at regular intervals since they adopted the current format. A few months ago, I got a tour of their studio. (They moved in across the street from where I worked, I wrote Libby to say welcome to the neigborhood, and she just invited me on over. Nice woman.) I asked about the music tweaks and she basically said that it was always in the plan to adjust as they went along until they settled in on a mix that really worked.jim

I listened today for about 25 minutes and my sampling of the station told me they were an 80's pop station. Around 3:00pm to 3:30pm.Hopefully their big message is that they will get some better jocks and a new station voice.

I have to laugh. Their jocks certainly aren't any worse than most of the Indy area talent...rather on par with the rest of the market; with the exception of Q95, who has had a stellar lineup in place for years. And KLU's jocks all seem to fit the format and the station...and actually communicate with the listeners. As far as the station voice, any station worth their salt would be doing well to get someone of the caliber of Bill St. James. He sounds great every week on the nationally syndicated "Flashback" program for ABC. Lifetime likes him. So does Discovery Channel. And several movie studios--for their movie trailers. He'd be on more stations....But Bill doesn't image stations. Except for WKLU. Hmmmmm.....The naysayers continue....even after Russ and Co. took the station from a bottom rated non-entity to a top 5 12+. Radio 2100....You may not like it....but the listeners apparently do. GoO Russ! Go Libby! Show em what it's like to do real radio!!

Where's their studio located?on Knue Road in Castleton at the former WFMS location. Transmitter and tower are on the far westside of Indy near 21st and Country CLub Roads.

I just read Radio 2100's thoughts. Obviously, he works for one of the other stations. According to the Winter book, WKLU is #3 / 25-54. So, a low power station that doesn't put a full signal over Indy beats every station 25-54 except WFMS and WFBQ. Remove the Bob and Tom factor and KLU would most likely be equal or best FBQ. We need more independent operators who are hell-bent on showing corporate radio how to do it. For my taste in air talent, their jocks are better than most in town.

Yeah, you have to admit Russ has done an admirable job not only with the programming, but also with the vast improvement in both audio and overall signal. I'm kind of a dial hopper, but I do listen to them probably more than Q-95 now that they are playing some better cuts. The processing is a tad harsh for my ears, but overall, they sound pretty decent for a 4Kw stick.

Huh???? Their signal sucks. You lose them in the car at 465 and 70 on the east side. When my cousin came to visit he stayed at that new hotel at I 69 and 116th St. I told him to listen to 101.9 and he couldn't get it there. Except for the Disney station, of all the low power stations, KLU has the worst coverage.

Their signal might experience some problems at 116th and I69 as there exists an adjacent channel issue with 101.7 in Alexandria. Both stations increased their power, in conjunction with each other, and that location would be in the area where the two would interfere niceley with each other, especially on a crappy hotel clock radio. As for I70 and 465 on east side...I doubt it is their signal...my guess it is your radio.

Probably so...I can hear them just fine there in my vehicle (stock factory stereo), and a friend who lives at 21st and Mitthoeffer hears them ok in their house on a cheapo stereo. I work on Post Road right behind the big stick and they do get a bit of interference from those 50KW monsters that are on it, but still listenable. I have heard them almost into Rushville on I-70. I won't say they have the worst signal...try 95.9 if you want a challenge.

So ... it's a high-def announcement ... interesting ... I'm digging the gold station ... I'm not seeing having three HD stations as being a *ground-breaking* thing ... but I don't know the technicals involved in getting just one on the air. This might actually get me to get an HD radio though.

Good luck finding one locally. I've listened to Q-2 HD and it sounds pretty decent. The HD thing sure has a lot of possibilities, and the stations are for the most part doing a good job trying to promote it, but NO ONE has the damned radios! The manufacturers are really dragging their feet on this whole thing. Great article in Radio World this week about it, and while stations are sinking thousands into HD transmitters, associated equipment and formats, listenership is virtually null because of lack of receivers, and the ones that are out there are still kind of pricey. So did KLU make mention of what's airing on their HD channel, or is it just a simulcast of their analog channel?

it's different formats ... HD2 is Gold (very nice) ... HD3 is Club ... they mentioned both are available to stream as well from their website.the whole HD thing has me baffled as to whether it will actually work ... but if radios are hard to find ... perhaps it'll kill it before it even can even take off.

Just a correction to an earlier post. 101.7 is in Elwood, not Alexandria. Plus there are protection issues farther north with 101.9 in Roann/Peru, which leads it's directional signal away from the south to protect KLU, but came on the air before the KLU move further east. Hence KLU needs to direct their signal away from the Elwood AND Roann frequency.

And if I remember correctly, during the KLU upgrade last year, Russ Oasis also picked up the tab for 101.7 in Elwood to go directional in order for him to move the KLU transmitter from Brownsburg to Indy. Supposedly some careful engineering had to be done to not only protect Elwood, but also Q-102 in Cincy. When KLU first went on the air, they wanted to be closer to Indy and talked to the Elwood folks about it. At the time, Elwood claimed they were getting a 6KW upgrade (which never happened and they knew it wouldn't) and refused to discuss it any further with the Quinns. Guess money talked in this particular situation and everyone came out fine.

Tim Cramer sounds great as the station voice on KLU's HD2. Is Rick Peters still living? I recall he and Oasis working together before. I hear something of a Peters influence on that playlist.
