WKLU format change?

They've been drifting closer to oldies. Will they go all the way before the start of the book. Didn't WKLR used to be oldies at 93.1? Will WKLU become the new WKLR?

As I said earlier, if an Indy station wants to make an impact and get good numbers they'll go CLASSIC HITS. That's not the same as what 104.5 used to do. Classic Hits format has a wider variety of songs and artists but which were all genuine Top-40 hits. In WKLU's case, it'll make more money and the owner will be able to ask for more when he sells it.

Isn't WKLU essentially a Classic Hits station now? Granted, I don't get to hear it that often (I am too far east), but when I am in the Indy area I do check them out and I have looked at their playlists on YES, Inc. I know they don't brand themselves as classic hits, but it would seem that hearing Boz Scaggs, Phil Collins, Lenny Kravitz, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Van Halen, and ELO on the air there would have them heavily leaning that direction. It's definitely different from the Kool 101.9 days (not that I really minded that, anyway ;-) )

From a personal standpoint, I'd love to see someone pick up the oldies ball and run long with it. But with all the WTPI rumors coming up zeros so far, it doesn't look that will happen anytime soon.
Edited by SgtPepper9876 on 09/08/05 07:00 PM.

WTPI will not go Oldies, so WKLU should just go for it.

Given the TV ads I'm now seeing ... I'd doubt any format change. While I'd like to see/hear an oldies station ... I'm more than satisfied with WKLU's current format.

I'm not sure that they'd be a "Classic Hits" station though ... I heard Boston's My Destination from Third Stage and I don't recall that ever being on the air when that album was released. Given some of the other obscure pieces I've heard, they remind me of ... forgive me if I'm guessing the format incorrectly ... Album Rock (in which they'll play obscure pieces from an album).

KLU was oldies as WQFE in the mid 90's before Bruce Quinn got control of the station.

Didn't Quinn start WQFE from the ground up??

I was thinking the same thing. Bruce always said he chose those calls to stand for *Quinn Family Empire*.
______________
We learned more from a 3-minute record than we ever learned in school.

Yep. Actually the entire family was involved in one way or another. Bruce's folks pretty much financed the thing to get it on the air, his brother would come over from Dayton on weekends and help out some. Steve Ross was actually running the station until it Bruce took it over. Bruce had friends at the FCC and was instrumental in getting the frequency allocated to Brownsburg. He spent most of his time running his other stations in Attica and Monticello. Attica was sold not too long after, and Bruce continued to run the Monticello station before returning to Brownsburg to "fix" KLU after 3 previous format "failures".
It was pretty much built from used stuff and whatever they could rustle up at garage sales. Pretty much local at first...a hodge-podge format, ball games, fish fries, etc.

i think so but Bruce didnt take full control of running the programming till the late 90's when it went From Oldies as QFE to Ecletic KLU

They ran a :30 on WTHR Thursday night before the 11pm news. It's the :30 commercial immediately before the start of the news. It's a top dollar spot. When did they start advertising..

Seems to me that Oasis waited to get the station running on "full" power before letting loose of the advertising $$. No since in buying TV when 60% of the audicence cannot hear you!
