WKNR Hires Tony Grossi

Source: WKNR hires Tony Grossi to cover Browns

Published: Wednesday, March 07, 2012

Longtime Browns reporter Tony Grossi has been hired by WKNR-AM 850 to be the station's beat reporter, an industry source said.

Grossi announced via Twitter that he had resigned from the Plain Dealer on Wednesday. He was taken off the Browns beat by the newspaper on Jan. 26 for what some thought was an unflattering tweet about Browns owner Randy Lerner. The tweet was deleted less than a minute later, but the damage had already been done.

I feel bad for Tony, the twitter thing was as sad as it was stupid but for him to end up on KNR, I hoped better for him.

Grossi will be fine on KNR.

He'll likely be a very frequent contributor on RBS, The Hooligans, and 850's Browns pregame/postgame show.

He'll also probably write a lot of stories on KNR's website.

And he's still got his STO gig as well (and if WKYC/STO--due to their partnership with the Browns--decide to let Tony go, he'll find TV work elsewhere--19 perhaps?)

IMO Grossi got hosed by the PD. Why they didn't stand up for him is beyond me.
I too feel bad for him. The guy is writer. He's not a broadcaster. Hope he can convert to radio.

Hopefully KNR follows the lead of other top sports stations across the country and really invests into their website with fresh content. We have seen it with the ESPN-owned stations around the country and the hiring of newspaper reporter to work on their website. Non ESPN-owned stations have done it as well (I forget the name of the Boston station). Grossi is a good writer and good writers don't need newspapers anymore. KNR is a good option. I hope he spends more time on the website doing the same things he did with the PD.

Qestion to anyone in the know......does Grossi still keep his Hall of Fame voting privledges. He has led the fight against Art Modell and I would like for him to remain in that spot.

The PD was merely "kissing the ring" (Godfather reference) as far as Grossi/Browns go. The Browns give the PD good ad $$ (ever see how many ads for Browns tickets are in the PD?), thus they didn't want to upset the apple cart.

Remember...this isn't the first time Grossi got removed from the Browns beat because the top men in Berea got a burr in their saddle.

Grossi will do fine as the resident Browns analyst/beat reporter...he'll be a frequent fixture on RBS, Hooligans, and the various pre/postgame shows, as well as writing articles for ESPNCleveland.com (though you can forget "Browns Daily" for obvious reasons).

The Fan is starting to get it's bearings in the ratings, go KNR saw the chance to get another big gun for their roster...nothing wrong with that.

Grossi stated he no longer votes for HOF inductions-Mary Kay now does it-I'm hoping KNR will say when he will be on, I don't want to listen to 4 hours of RBS to catch Grossi for a 5 minute phone call-I thought Grossi was great, I know people have different opinions, but he was usually dead on with most of his stuff.

Craig Karmazin will be on RBS on Monday for a "State of the Station" address, so that would be as likely a day as any for an announcement to be made.

And I would think Grossi would get 20-25 minute segments...especially on RBS...not quick "in-and-outs".

Good point about Grossi writing for the website.

I really hope he provides content daily to the website much like he would if he was still with the PD. They finally have a legit writer on the payroll and not such hosts with their blogs, which nobody reads.

Provide fresh content to the website and the fans will read it.

For Karmazin's state of the station address did he tell everyone that we all love Aaron Goldhammer and Chris Fedor like he always does? In one such address he stated that 95% of respondents loved them. Thanks for asking their parents and grandparents Craig LOL.

All CK did on-air was introduce (and gush over) Grossi, and the rest of the time was spent by Rizzo crying to Grossi about the Browns missing out on RG3.

They did mention though that the actual "state of the station" adress would take place off-air after RBS.

I think the state of the station did happen-I hardly listen anymore, but they were talking about signing Tony Rizzo on for 2 more years or something like that (as if he has a better gig somewhere else)-some of his bits are things he took from Les Levine in the WHK days-this was one, and "top men" was something Les used all the time back then.

In all seriousness though hiring Tony Grossi will bring even more credibility to the station. Hiring Bruce Hooley was an excellent move too. Get away from the Fedor and Goldhammer drama and hire hosts that are serious about their craft and not just creating nonsense for the sake of creating it.

+1......" ...just creating nonsense for the sake of creating it ....." Hooley and Grossi are great improvements to the staff.

Mel's kid hates to have to pay guys like Hooley and Grossi.....but he got them both when they were out of work. ( read 'cheap' )

Hammer is great. Someone needs to cool down all the Honks. The guy doesn't believe in Colt and hates Ohio State. While I support Colt and the Buckeyes someone needs to tell us that the rest of the country hates tOSU because they really do. I love getting the outsiders prospective, even though there are many times I want smash the radio when Hammer won't shut up about how much he hates Colt. The show would be boring if Tony and Aaron but agreed on everything.

I'd put more stock in Hammer's takes if it wasn't so obvious that he's playing the "heel". They always try to deny that it's schtick, but Hammer's so over the top with it, that it really makes it hard to think that it's his genuine opinions.

Thats it exactly. Its a phoney schtick done very badly. Its not just an outsiders opinion, its a lame schtick poorly executed. Its just tired and boring at this point.
