WKNR is a joke...more proof

We've hit on an exhaustive list of WKNR follies, so it's tough to come up with new material.

But after the rumors spread about the firing of Browns' GM Phil Savage, I started getting phone calls from friends all over the country. They were asking me why WKNR doesn't stream online. To this day, I can't name another sub 30 market w/o an online feed. Even some COLLEGE radio stations simulcast online. We understand that WKNR has some serious constraints when it comes to spending money - but I personally know of some low-budget stations that do it b/c they feel they owe it to their audience. Although, there in-lies the problem: KNR don't have an audience.

What say you Luscak??

You can actual barter your stream.

Why let more people than necessary hear their horrible act? Although, by those standards, WHK wouldn't stream (and there's no reason for them to since it's the same as every other "Where your Opinion Counts" talker).

WHK Streams, WKNR Doesn't?

I can't figure out why they got a stream up for WHK, but not for WKNR. I suspect the latter is tied up in the loss of STC as an Internet partner...it took them some while to put up a site that was more than a one-page plug for the dining thing.

For what it's worth, I'm out of the market until Tuesday, and I am camped out listening to WTAM's stream. I can actually get WKNR's audio, but I'll have to configure the downstairs PC (remotely) to send it to me...

It's my guess WKNR doesn't stream because the majority of their programming is from ESPN and their contract probably prohibits streaming ESPN shows...so they figure...why bother streaming at all. That's just a guess.

It is indeed sad that northeastern Ohio doesn't have at least one fulltime (or nearly fulltime) sportstalk radio station. If you include Akron and Canton to Cleveland's metro area...that's about 3 million population. You'd think that'd be big enough.
Edited by John T. I know for a fact that ESPN does not allow streaming (except on their own website, of course).

I am pretty sure Jim Rome also has the same philosophy.

That leaves Greg Brinda, Kenny Roda, Bob Karlovec, OSU football and basketball, CSU basketball, and the Lake County Captains as properties which they can stream.

Debate the quality of the programming all you want, but it should be made avalible at least.

I don't know about that. I've seen websites of ESPN affiliates that carry ESPN Radio's stream.

WXLW Indianapolis's ESPN affiliate streams and i've heard some ESPN programming on it's stream. Darn shame Clear Channel ended up giving up on the move of WWVA from Wheeling to the Cleveland Burbs to give them a 50kw sports alternative to WKNR

If you include Akron and Canton to Cleveland's
metro area...that's about 3 million population. You'd
think that'd be big enough

You had three full time sportstalk stations when 2005 started..WTIG in Massillon still has ESPN radio, the BlueJackets and Reds..and pulls a 0.1 in 12+ when somebody actually gives them a diary mention..

Akron's sportstalker became Radio Free Ohio earlier this year at 1350..

Do I have to say it again? The sportstalk audience, with some exceptions, consists of men who live in their mom's basements, and who have never seen a grown woman naked..if you listen to 1480 WHBCs ''Sportsline'' show during high school football season, for about 10 minutes, the points I've made become readily evident..

There is no money to be made from it..Sportstalk is a turnkey operator's dream format..and nothing else..

It's not like CC couldn't shell out a couple bucks and buy another Cleveland station to program sports on; they could outdo 'KNR by crosspromotion from 'TAM and occassionally the FMs alone. Why sack heritage local service in another city?

Don't forget that Kent/Ravenna has a sports talk station audible with luck in parts of Akron, the mighty 1000 watt daytime rimshot WJMP/1520. :D

Agree with the last part.

But I think that CC is max-ed out in Cleveland proper. Remember, the COL of the 1170 move was Stow--within the Akron market (under the Arbitron market system--has that been accepted by the FCC?) So, while we ALL knew what CC was doing and how big a farce it was, CC's lawyers were well within the market limits.

The only available AM signal worth anything in Cleveland proper is 850--and only if the nighttime signal issues can be worked out with co-channels. I'd say 1220, as a fulltime 50kw, but it's north and south directional: good if you want to target Charlotte and Moose Jaw, but bad if you want to target Mentor and/or Lorain.
