WKNR Programming Changes

I bounced between Cleveland's Talking Heads on The Fan and The Really Big Show this on KNR this week to see how both shows stacked up. The result...

I found The Fan more enjoyable than KNR. On The Fan, there was talk about sports! Over on KNR, there was a contest for listeners to hear who can guess which quote came from which film. The Fan seem to put their format to better use than KNR.

Another example, Rizzo had Hammer and Fedor take an open quiz to see who knows Cleveland history better. Neither co-host scored high enough, but I knew they would still be on no matter what. However, I personally didn't think that had anything to do with sports. That show seems to annoy me, and I really can't stand Hammer and his god awful voice. Yet, I couldn't really pull away completely.

I bet Hammer was going to be "reduced" but he complained about so much, that his buddy decided to keep him on as is or maybe the whole "reduced" situation was just blowing smoke.

To me, CK does NOT want to blow up WKNR to a point where the station can be taken seriously a lot more. They keep giving people who work hard crap, while those who aren't very likeable (Fedor, Hammer, Sabrina Parr - who is no longer at KNR and left on her choice) get to stay on and get treated like royalty no matter how many people dislike them with a passion.

I think Dustin Fox and Lindsey Foltin make a good move heading to The Fan.

??? The Goldhammer family is NOT part of the wealthy elite some of you think they are. Joe is like a father to me. It seems out of character to buy his son a career. Aaron always struck me as an honest guy, so please ask him. I'm sure he'd be happy to clear up these rumors.

BBBWWWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Goldhammer will never be taken seriously in this market. He has made sure of that. As for the rest of the background info, well, that doesnt play into his favor, either, despite what this "mystery Goldhammer-supporter" claims.

For what it's worth...

WKNR has "ESPN Cleveland Gamenight" listed on Wednesday from 7-9p.

Monday will see Reghi and Cherry 7-9 (on Mondays "Xs and Os" did the show from a wing establishment with Browns cornerback Joe Haden and a different teammate every week, so there's probably contractual obligations there).

Tuesday and Thursday have MLB playoffs (via ESPN Radio), and Fridays have the usual "High School Hysteria" game of the week.

Also, they have Je'Rod Cherry sitting in on the RBS today (perhaps trying him out to be the new 3rd wheel?)

And it sounds like Hammer is in "speak only when spoken to" mode.

Hooley, Brinda, and Fedor are in the middle of their debut show.

Hooley is positioned as the main host, with Brinda as co-host.

Ned is the 3rd wheel (as Bruce and Greg are coming off as clearly the main personalities), he's doing updates and as far as I can tell is also producing (as they have made no mention of a producer that I've heard anyway).

Funny that no one is discussing the ratings that were released yesterday. Could it be because everyone here predicted the quick demise of WKNR and that KNR actually added CUME, while 92.3 debuted with a 1.2?

Still only a month in, alot can change.

20 year head start vs 1 month. Just wait.

Outsdie of us sports nuts, there was not much lead time to make people aware of the new sports talker in town. In time, the Fan will have higher #s than WKNR.

As for KNR's recent moves. I like the hiring of Hooly. Many may not agree with him on OSU, but he is a professional and runs a very smooth show. Listen to him and then compare him to Fedor. it's not even close. That was a good hire by KNR.

As for Reghi and Roda. This has to be considered a huge demotion for them and I wonder how they are handling it. I am sure they dont like the fact the kids (Fedor and Aaron) have bigger roles.

I'm still waiting for the demo breakdowns, and the daypart breakdowns to make any judgement. 12+ for a format judgement mean nothing, especially when the previous format's demos were blown out totally. The real curiosity factor will be how Bull and Fox stand up against Hooley and Co.

Then again, WKNR's lineup is so awkward (tRBS and Rome are bundled together) so the midday daypart will not have be even ratings comparison against 92.3 anyway.

I don't mind them hiring Hooley. In fact, that's a pretty proactive move.

The only problem I have is that they basically stuck him in with dead weight in Brinda and Fedor. It's been proven before that Brinda is incapable of playing second fiddle (remember "Brinda & the BSK?") and Fedor is a monopolizer behind the microphone.

That configuration can't work.

It's a foolish man who makes a rash call based on a single month's book, and I guess I'm not that foolish. :D

CBS is in this for the long haul. And the station "The Fan" displaced was a rock station with a pretty partisan audience...who probably spread to the winds once the alt-rock format went away (or to HD2, same thing).

Can't tell in the first monthly PPMs. If they're still sub-2 in a year, we may have a problem...but even then, CBS is in this thing so they can pick off some of the PBP rights. That'll start next year.

I'm pleasantly surprised with Hooley. I haven't heard him in any lengthy capacity until this, and I think bringing him on was a good move for 'KNR. We'll see if the three-wheel show works, tho.

I would rather have paired Hooley with TJ Zuppe, Will Burge or Dave DeNatalie... or hell, even LeCharles. Something different, something fresher. Not with the usual suspects in what ends up looking like a sorry recycling act.

There's this hunch I have that WKNR was trying to get Hooley much, MUCH earlier - so as to upstage WKRK's flip to sports - but his contract took longer than anticipated. Who knows, he could be commanding a Rizzo-like salary.

Reghi and Roda are so far saying the right things, but doesn't it feel like Craig K. demoted them so that either or both could eventually quit?

I don't think it's any secret that KNR and Hooley had a very visible flirtation with each other over the spring/summer (the frequent appearances as a guest, and fill-in duties on RBS).

Also, it's real obvious they wanted to create "RBS PM" with the current show.

At this point, CK better hope R & R don't quit, considering he'd have 5 hours to fill from 7 p.m. - midnight if it happened (he still has to figure out what to do about the slot formerly occupied by Xs and Os, which for the time being is being taken care of via the MLB playoffs on ESPN Radio).

So what should KNR do with slot formerly held by Xs and Os? I think they should keep Jerod Cherry there and pair him with TJ Zuppe, Will Burge, or Dave Denetale.

I just want to hear something different and I am not at all sold on the post 7pm show on 92.3

Is there anything national they would consider at that slot?

Just in:

"Munch in the Morning" producer/sidekick T.J. Zuppe and former RBS sidekick turned promotions guy Tim "Grasshopper" Naida will have their own show on KNR2 1540 from 4-5 p.m. called "T and T"

If you did a radio show and no one could hear it, would it make any noise?

Just an FYI...

This is Joe Lull from The Fan. At one time I posted regularly on another radio forum under the name "Sideline99". I was always honest about who I was and what name I was posting under.

In perusing this board today I see someone has taken the handle "Sideline99" and begun posting under it here. Considering this individual took a borderline shot at one of my friends and co-workers in their one and only post, I wanted to immediately clarify that the "Sideline99" on this board is NOT me.

I don't plan on posting here often, although I do enjoy reading many of the thoughts shared here. But if I AM to post on this board it surely won't be me taking a backhanded shot at a friend and colleague who I think is doing an admirable job.

Don't mean to hijack the conversation, but I owe it to myself to immediately draw that distinction.

Carryon.

Joe,

Thanks. I read the term " keyboard cowards " somewhere. ;D
There's some other blogs I see lately that require a posting of yuourr real name along wioth your screen name.

The anonimity on these boards can be a tool of the devil sometimes! ;)

good luck at The Fan

I erred in the earlier post.

It isn't T.J. Zuppe hosting the show...it's T.J. Wichmann, who is the owner of "Eddy and Iggy's" (an establishment run by grads of St Ed's and St Ignatius..hence the name).

Obviously, after looking at it a little closer, the "TnT" show looks like a brokered deal.
