WKNY Broadcast Problems?

???For the last week there's been no signal in the evening, except for the locally recorded news on the hour. In fact, there's been no network news in the daytime, either. I thought dead-air was the worst thng a station could have. The least they should do is played taped music, otherwise no one would know 1490 existed!

I have noticed this happening from time to time . Sometimes(probably if someone is paying attention) the CBS News will pick up partway though the newscast . This is just a guess on my part but perhaps the computer is missing the queue to switch to the satellite to receive the news . I believe they are supposed to have a back up that will kick in some alternative program after a preset time of silence .I assume WKNY uses voice tracking to some degree, but then again they are a throw back station . They are local not off a satellite , play AC music on AM and have a decent amount of news, although not as much as in the past . In other words an old school full service station .There is nothing wrong with that per say . However I am surprised Cumulus allows them to exist like this . WKNY never shows up in the ratings probably because few people listen to music on AM these days due to the poor sound quality and interference issues on AM, as well as the abysmal chatter cutting their range to only a few miles at night.

I tried sending them an email (1490wkny.com) to find out what is going on, but haven't gotten a reply. They advertise it as the Instant Feedback Page. Meanwhile, there's currently dead-air. It makes it tough to use them with the clock radio alarm, because there's no sound until 6AM! ???

I didn't even realize my radio was still on, when all of a sudden, WKNY came alive with a minute news segment that was obviously taped last Friday! Now it's dead again. Doesn't anyone at the station know how to engineer?

I think it’s more like nobody at these big clusters like Cumulus don’t care much about little AM stations , which are non or little revenue producing . This is especially true especially ones in a different city than the main cluster . A few years ago , then Clear Channel owned WGHQ, Kingston was off the air an entire weekend and nobody noticed ! Although, they like I said WKNY sound sold school, much of the time nobody is minding the store .Maintenance on these AM stations like WKNY is minimal . I can’t receive them at night in Hyde Park but I have noticed their signal isn’t what it used to be.

It sounds like WKNY is simulcasting from MIX97, Hyde Park, at night. They're both Cumulus, AC oriented, and that's OK by me. Anything beats dead-air.
