WKOR-Starkville

I know exactly where my blue satin KOR jacket is...still in pretty good shape. Don't plan on wearing it anytime soon though. Hudson's one liners were always my favorite...of course he told them over, and over, and over...which made them even funnier:

*Hey, did you hear about the over-sexed indian? He jumped into his canoe and shot off across the lake!

Or...

*You know what Speedy Gonzales told the virgin? It won't hurt....did it!

Or...

*Did you hear about the queer bear who laid his paw on the table?

Yeah, I know they aren't very PC, but then again...neither was Hudson. Have a Coke and a smile Hud, you are missed.

Hey guys, noticed this thread's gone over 3500 views! Think we oughta challenge the WJDQ folks to see who can keep it going longer? Hey Robert Grayson, how about a Wikipedia posting about the King Of Rock!
On another note, see where 'Ol Don Vaughn's got himself a weekly column in the Clarion-Ledger. It's about word definitions or something to that effect. It's over my head. I had enough trouble keeping up with whether it was pronounced "Stark-ville" or "Stark-'vl" when I did the weather....

Can ya tell it's Friday?

Yes I saw DV's column in the Clarion Ledger a week or so back... even referenced WKOR.... did a real good job explaining how the words go from the Control Room to your car's radio.... I always wondered how that worked.... still a little fuzzy on the subject

I was always given a hard time in the delta for saying Bel-Zo-Nee instead of Bel-Zo-Nuh. I still shudder at the reaction I got the first time Gautier came up in a news story...

I remember hearing Stan Torgerson pronouncing Gautier as "gator".

I didn't read all this WKOR stuff, but somebody did mention Chuck Cooper. He and his wife Wanda have a small FM sttaion in Highlands, NC now.

That's no worse than Janice Broach here in Memphis once referring to Tuck-sun, Arizona, in a newscast on WREC. With those credentials, it's no surprise she was hired by WMC-TV and has worked there as a reporter, quite successfully, for years!

I just went to former WKOR GM Chuck Cooper's WHLC/Highlands, North Carolina website, it's great!

Be sure to click on "WHLC History" button for a photo of Chuck and his wife Wanda!

Chuck was my GM down at WJDX/WZZQ back in the early 70s... nice to see he's still in the radio game!

Chuck and Wanda's station looks good. I spoke with Chuck about a month ago. He called one eveing about 10PM and talked for an hour. We went through all the old Golden Triangle radio news from the last 20 years.
It took him many years to get that station on the air. There was a goup in the area that did not want a radio tower there. Many years and many $'s later the station finally got on the air. I think he was looking for someone to come up there and work. One of the main problems being in a mountain resort area, is that the real estate is out of reach for the average person. Most of the people there are extremely well off and are just there in the summer time months. Chuck has an apartment for his operations manager over the station because of the high prices and lack of rental living space.
Although he didn't come right out and ask, I think he was interested in finding a radio person to work with him.
Anyone who enjoys really cold weather and a really long winter, might want to contact Chuck and see if there is an opening.

Andy-Bob,

Thanks for pointing me in this direction. I've enjoyed catching up on many of the KOR gang...keeps memories of Dennis alive. Again ~ he had no idea how many lives he touched. I could go on and on, but remember what he always told me, "Brevity is the soul of wit!" so I must keep it brief.

talk later....Jenn

Is this Jennifer that worked at 'KOR in the late 80's? The "Bo-Bet" name sounds like something Hudson would have made up. If so, you don't know this, but I named one of my daughters after you.

Hey Russ,

That is THE Jennifer of 80's, KOR fame. We've stayed in touch over the years...I'll tell her about naming your daughter after her...she'll freak.

Hi guys,

I guess 99% of you are from a different era than my first encounter with WKOR. I never worked there, but was around during the time when it was being put on the air while they were building the studios and putting the format and air staff together, getting the jingles cut at Pepper in Memphis, etc. My voice did appear on WKOR via some commercials and promos that I cut with another Vicksburger named Tom Allen. He had been on our staff at WQMV. Bill Tanner who was the very first PD was an old friend of mine from our hometown of Vicksburg. He worked at WQBC in Vicksburg in 1961 and I was the kid who always hung around. Around 1965 I went to work at WVIM in Vicksburg and then we were part of the first staff that put on WQMV, a brand new FM in Vicksburg in 1966. Tanner left to work at WNSL in Laurel, and I was working at WWUN the summer of '68. He called one day to tell me he'd been hired to put on a new station in Starkville, and I visited WKOR on a several occasions during that time. That's where I first met Mark Shands who has appeared on this thread. We ended up working together in Jackson and also at Y-100 in Miami.
Interestingly, Chuck Cooper who eventually bought WKOR was the new GM at WJDX when I was hired to be PD of WJDX-FM. We were still virtually free-form progressive rock when I finally convinced Chuck that we could turn it into a real powerhouse with some format revisions. He went for it, and we changed the call letters to WZZQ and you know the rest. I brought Gary Phillips over to do mornings from WJDX-AM. He and I had worked together at WRBC in late 71 & early 72. Yes, Bob Pittman was there at WRBC at that time also. I remember him coming into the control room my first afternoon on the air at WRBC to introduce himself and tell me he'd listened to me on WRNO in New Orleans. Being from (I belive) Brookhaven, he had spend a lot of time listening to New Orleans radio.

I noticed a mention of the passing of a guy named Dennis Hudson. I never knew he worked at WKOR, but I did work with him at WRBC during my 2nd of 3 tenures there. This was early 1968. Shortly after that I jumped ship to WWUN and never heard from Dennis again.

Thanks for the memories again.
Johnny Sommer

Dang, Johnny. I should have talked to you more about your past when I was at JDX. I'm just enujoying the heck out of your posts here tonight.

I got a kick out of the studios for WKOR when I was at WSSO. I had a couple of friends at 'KOR (Johnny Franklin is the only name I remember- can't recall the other guy) and used to go over there sometimes. I loved their air monitor- an old car radio.

And Bill Tanner...I was in awe of the guy. Went up to try to get a weekend job at JDX in the old studios, and was so nervous talking to him I'm amazed I didn't faint. Didn't get the job (gads, did I suck on the air in those days! LOL) but I remember feeling great that I even got the chance to talk to Tanner. JDX never was as good as it sounded when he was running it...

It's good to see Chuck Cooper doing well. I remember when he got sacked at JDX. I went by a few times to visit while he was "on the beach." I heard a lot of snide comments about him after he was gone, but I liked the guy.

Johnny, when I worked at WJDX, I can still see you back in Houston Jones' office sanding away on a jukebox. Do you still rebuild old juke boxes as a hobby? Where are you now?

Goodness... they let anyone in here, don't they? :D :D :D

(Whatever became of the "Ol' Wagon Wheel"?)
