Schultz has stated quite publicly that he USED to be a Republican. And while he calls himself a Liberal, he also calls himself "middle of the road." I'm not sure that one can be both middle of the road AND Liberal. Shultz, like Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, is not pro-choice, which means they both flunk one of the main Liberal litmus tests. Schultz hasn't completely concealed his stand on abortion but he manages to almost completely avoid talking about it. I think Reid is a tiny bit more open than Schultz about his stand on the subject.Randi Rhodes has said a couple of times on her show that she doesn't like Schultz and that Schultz isn't a nice guy. I think the bad blood is related to Schultz's agreeing to voice the opinions of his financial backers, something that Rhodes has said she would never do. I think her contract gives her complete control over what she says on the air (must be limited by the bounds of decency, though).I too, like Malloy. Somehow, he strikes me as both passionate and in control. He does his show from Atlanta even though I don't think he is a native of the South. Maybe his wife is from down there. Why else a Liberal would choose to bring up a family in such a red-neck area is beyond me.When she first went on the air in Boston, Rhodes was one of my heroes, but now I think that, too often, she sounds as if she is running out of control. Thom Hartmann, is super! What a command of American history! He is articulate, entertaining, and educational. I wish that WKOXKS carried more than just his weekend best-of shows. Rumor has it that when Franken leaves to run for the Senate from Minnesota, if AAR is still on the air, Hartmann will get Franken's slot. Currently, Hartmann is heard weekdays only on the West Coast, I believe. One time a guy who did AM drive on what was then AAR's Phoenix affiliate (KXXT 1010, which has since been sold; AAR is now on a different station in Phoenix) did a guest slot as a replacement for one of AAR's regular hosts. I forget the guy's name but he was good too. Jay Marvin, who does AM drive on AM 760 in Thornton-Boulder-Denver, has filled in for Schultz as well as for AAR hosts. I don't think Marvin brings a whole lot to the party. Both Marvin and Malloy are alumni of WLS.Aside from the AAR crew and the Jones crew are there any other "nationally syndicated" Liberal talk hosts? The only one I know of is Lionel, who I believe is syndicated by WOR. Occasionally, WBIX runs an hour of Lionel on the day after the program was originally broadcast. I guess Lionel is OK--maybe marginally better than Jay Marvin.
