wkpw 90.7 signal

I realize most folks don't pick up 90.7 and I primarily only pick it up near Greenfield more so than when I'm on the North side of Indy, but it wasn't but a few weeks ago that I could at least get a signal up to NE-side 465/69 split. Lately, I can't even get a consistent signal in Greenfield. Anyone know what's going on? I'm picking up a Christian talker when I'm up on the north-side now (very poor signal), but I also can't find anyone nearby with that frequency besides the high school in Knightstown.

I can see why folks are moving to satellite and ipods ... my demographic is becoming more like dust in the wind every day ... :p
 
They are having transmitter issues. Parts are on the way. The signal will return to full strength soon. Thanks for listening!
 
Excellent ... It's the station I listen to the most (I'm sure the lack of commercials are part of that), but even in terms of the music, it's more hit than miss for my taste. Lately, I've had to spend more time with 96.7 and 104.5 and while I enjoy those stations, the hit/miss ratio tends to be a little more miss (and I've got very few alternatives ... minus NPR and ESPN depending on the time of day, but sometimes I just don't want to listen to talkers).

The Christian talker you're picking up on 90.7 is WQSG, a 25,000 watter licensed to Lafayette.

Hopefully, WKPW gets back to full-power soon.
 
Management has weighed the cost of repairing the current 19 year old transmitter & elected to purchase a new one instead. Hopefully the order will be placed this week & received next week. Meanwhile, operation at 4% of normal power continues.

Good news, indeed. And I'll be doing a lot of driving this weekend, so even better.
 
New transmitter was DOA upon arrival. But did improve what we had to work with. Power now up to 6%.

It really chaps your butt when you have to make repairs before you
can fire up a band new transmitter. WKPW must have used the same
shipping company that I did last time. Wish I could have warned them.
If the box says, Don't drop. That means throw it, to these shippers.
 
Nope...it means a combo of I feel like an idiot & the BE tech support guy should as well. There was a coaxial jumper that coupled the internal exciter into the transmitter. I didn't see anything about it in the installation instructions. The station manager installed the jumper & it sprang to life around noon today. Should be back to it's ferocious 4.4KW vertical self now.

They don't change formats very often...they were Country for a long time before Classic Hits. I passed along your praises to management...you weren't the only one. Phone calls, emails, faxes. Not many high school stations are even noticed as being off the air. This one created a small avalanche when it failed. Thanks again for listening & enjoy!
 
I had a comforting drive home yesterday listening to WKPW ... and I think the high school stations are more consistent then many of the commercial stations ... but I suppose that has more to do with commercialization. I wish they streamed with something other than ustream ... I'd listen to them more often ... although, that's probably more of a budgetary decision.
 
If you know any deep pocketed underwriters, let me know. The station broadcasts with Vertical polarity only. Thanks to WRTV going away, WKPW is now free to add 4400 watts of Horizontal polarity as well. New antenna & bigger transmitter (although the one they just bought can be scaled to higher power). That would make the signal more robust. I'm pushing for this, but so far the word is that there probably won't be enough money to do it.
 
Bob, how does the WRTV thing effect all central indiana high schools? I am the GM at 91.7 WEEM (Pendleton Heights). By the way, deep pocketed underwriters include: Ivy Tech Community College! And you can run anything, so you can run thier current ad campaign because they are an official non-commercial educational organization. We just signed them to a pretty good underwriting deal, but of course we are always looking for more.
