I wished I could get up there to listen in the car. I haven't been in a while. Is WKQK still on the air at 1300? Is the translator (yeah, they have one!) broadcasting? They are on the web, via a bare bones website. Their FB page hasn't been updated in a long time (as least two years by the last comment regarding "where did the local music go" comment).
Yeah, I see the local music from Brevard is gone. It now sounds like a glorified TIS station you'd pick up on the turnpike -- lots of travel and traffic, tourist information on a loop. And it sounds all A.I'd as well, the "voices" I mean.
The all local music set up was interesting. It was nice to hear original music by unsigned bands, but it got a bit dicey when those bands were playing cover songs by well-known artists. Not that the covers were awful, but do we really want '70s Pickwick-styled covers of Heart and AC/DC songs? How does that compete with the major classic rock and classic hit stations.
I hope 321 Corporation brings that local format back. Perhaps if they did a commercial classic hits/classic rock format, but when heavy on the locals, say four times an hour? Or, expand the "local" format to unsigned bands from all over the state of Florida? I am sure that was all very time consuming, as all the announcing of the cuts was pre-programmed to the song (so you hear the same up-sells to songs over and over). Again, lots of AI and looped automation "announcer" segments.
I know they went through hard times. There were pictures of it, but I can't find them, now. Anyway, the last hurricane went through, took down the tower and a good chunk of the roof. They are now on a translator, as well, but not advertising it as far as I can tell on air or the site. It's W283DJ 104.5 Cocoa, Florida 250 watts, so I guess they cured their financial issues to afford a translator?
