WKQK 1300 Cocoa Beach

A quick look at FCC records indicates WKQK has authority to operate under STA with a facility different from the licensed facility, and that WKQK has notified the FCC the station is operating. Thus, WKQK status is not silent. Based on this brief look, they are in good standing with the FCC technical rules.

Radio stations are permitted to operate for an abbreviated schedule subject to the rule below, and other rules about extended off air periods.

I wished I could get up there to listen in the car. I haven't been in a while. Is WKQK still on the air at 1300? Is the translator (yeah, they have one!) broadcasting? They are on the web, via a bare bones website. Their FB page hasn't been updated in a long time (as least two years by the last comment regarding "where did the local music go" comment).

Yeah, I see the local music from Brevard is gone. It now sounds like a glorified TIS station you'd pick up on the turnpike -- lots of travel and traffic, tourist information on a loop. And it sounds all A.I'd as well, the "voices" I mean.

The all local music set up was interesting. It was nice to hear original music by unsigned bands, but it got a bit dicey when those bands were playing cover songs by well-known artists. Not that the covers were awful, but do we really want '70s Pickwick-styled covers of Heart and AC/DC songs? How does that compete with the major classic rock and classic hit stations.

I hope 321 Corporation brings that local format back. Perhaps if they did a commercial classic hits/classic rock format, but when heavy on the locals, say four times an hour? Or, expand the "local" format to unsigned bands from all over the state of Florida? I am sure that was all very time consuming, as all the announcing of the cuts was pre-programmed to the song (so you hear the same up-sells to songs over and over). Again, lots of AI and looped automation "announcer" segments.

I know they went through hard times. There were pictures of it, but I can't find them, now. Anyway, the last hurricane went through, took down the tower and a good chunk of the roof. They are now on a translator, as well, but not advertising it as far as I can tell on air or the site. It's W283DJ 104.5 Cocoa, Florida 250 watts, so I guess they cured their financial issues to afford a translator?

that transmitter site isnt a dump, but the grounds easily never dry out and have alligators roaming around back there and the transmitter room gets hotter than haides in the summer... and up unti labout 10 years ago had an lpb, inc omnitronix 5000a main TX.. and a non functional Collins 21E

all kidns of vermin got into the building from the transmitter room.. cats, rodents, etc

From scanning Google street view, the towers are gone. The studio building has been repurposed by some sort of construction company. Looks well cared for too. Remodeled.

There was the night I went outside about 130-2am to take the trash before walking back into that building when it was WTIR and going to bed ( i lived in the building) and some drunk fool came zooooomming down that side road as fast as that little yugo like piece of junk could take him, took the corner but just FLEW across the road.

I had to call 911 and i ended up with a few police and a helicopter overhead just after 2am!

WKQK is audible with a fair to poor signal here in north Melbourne during the daytime....at night Nashville is usually heard.
I don't hear the translator but WFLM (White City) is moving to 104.7 and farther south, so maybe after that....

KW

When I worked there, i had questions about and thought but couldnt prove, that middle tower wasnt functioning as part of the night time signal

Oh, and there was a transmitter in a shack outside in the parking lot that came from Whatever 910 in Valdosta, GA was at the time. This was summer 2005.. they had never told the FCC that 910 was off the air and continued to lie about it later
