I've not heard of 1000 WCFL before. What made them special?

WCFL was the major competitor to WLS in Chicago...and had a great signal in the parts of
Louisville we cruised in high school (68-71)...mainly the Iroquois Park area to 4th street...[repeat].
Same caliber of air talent as WLS...great imaging...

WCFL was at least as good as WLS...sometimes I thought it rocked just a little harder. Still remember Big Ron O'Brien advertising some kind of powder and saying 'if you have a donkey, you can slap some on your a**"...that was pretty risque for AM radio in the summer of '73.

not sure if I can attach this link...
http://radiotimeline.com/

click on "WCFL"

I think I see my buddy Jim Loupas, Chief Engineer of WCFL just under the "c" in "collectors", with the telephone cradled on his shoulder, in this pic: http://radiotimeline.com/survey4c.htm Could that be him?

I really didn't listen enough to the old AM stuff. My trouble is that that by the time I started driving in 1974, FM was the thing. It was all LRS and Hi-95 by then.

In Louisville in the late '60s I had 5 manual presets (like everyone else) on the AM car radio:

770 WABC
790 WAKY
890 WLS
1000 WCFL
1080 WKLO

now those were some great choices!

Heck yeah! Five great AM stations all playing Top 40 music. Two from Louisville, two from Chicago and of course the big one from New York City.

The change at 101.7 must be coming soon.101.7 is no longer mentioned during the hour on 790. It's only mentioned at the top of the hour legal ID.

Looks nothing will be changing until after Jan 31st. From mysports790.com

That would make sense. Any transfer I've ever been a part of was done at the end of the month for accounting purposes.

The FCC just approved the transfer last week:

WKRD-FM Shelbyville KY FM BALH-20111109AMW 269 A N 38° 12' 48.0" W 85° 10' 16.0" License 97 278 0.0 47
Granted App for Assignment of License for FM Station; Release Item within 100.0 kilometers of Flag Point; Licensee: Aloha Station Trust, LLC, as Trustee; Voluntary Assignment Of License, As Amended From: Aloha Station Trust, LLC To: Southern Belle, LLC FORM 314; Assignor: Aloha Station Trust, LLC; Assignee: Southern Belle, LLC; Applicant: Aloha Station Trust, LLC

A February 1 transfer seems very likely.

And what if the station continues to carry the UofL games after the transfer? Does that solve CC's problem of finding an FM for the games? CC could have cut a sweet deal to make sure the UofL simulcast continues for key sports, and the new guys get to sell it. Does that make all parties happy?

790 is back on the air.... Same imaging... nothing's changed that I can hear.
I think that 101.7 has been turned over to the new owner. There isn't any mention of 101.7 at all on 790 now.

But is there any mention of 790 on 101.7?

My guess is that a studio/STL needs to be constructed and that's not always easy during the winter. I really doubt that the new owners are at all concerned about whether people forget about what was there before or not. Heck, they may even be aiming the FM antenna toward Frankfort so that the signal will do them the most good rather than having it optimized toward Louisville (I would if it were mine)...and that's not a 2 hour job.
