WKRK to carry "components" of new CBS Sports Radio Network

Scheduled to start Sept. 4, CBS Sports Radio announced that 14 stations — including WFAN (660 AM) in New York — “will add various components of CBS Sports Radio programming to their lineup.”

A full 24/7 launch will take place Jan. 2, 2013, and CBS offered a list (see below) of eight stations — though none in this region — nationwide that already have signed on to broadcast the network full-time.

The network will include:
24/7 all-sports talk radio lineup to debut Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013. Original programs across multiple weekday and weekend time periods.
Opportunities for affiliates to regionalize their lineup by choosing from select programs currently featured on CBS Radio or Cumulus (which is the new network’s exclusive syndicator and sales partner) sports stations.
Beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 4, updates can be heard on all network affiliate stations.
Contributions from sport-specific experts, as well as a prominent role on the network from CBS Sports, CBS Sports Networks and CBSSports.com’s roster.
Online streaming of live network broadcasts.

The following CBS Radio stations will add various components of CBS Sports Radio programming to their lineup:
WFAN-AM (New York)

WSJT-FM (Tampa)
WJZ-FM (Baltimore)
WFNZ-AM (Charlotte)
KDKA-FM (Pittsburgh)

Interesting that all of a sudden CBS & NBC are into sports network programming on radio, to go along with ESPN, Fox, and anybody else I missed?

Doesn't that tell you a lot about the state radio is evolving into? Well, music-radio formats.

Nobody would drop a cheap to operate music-format for a high-cost heavily locally-hosted spoken word format unless they sensed a much better return on investment. Even partially-local-hosted usually brings higher overhead than many music formats.

Hmmmm. Think MP3's, Pandora/Spotify/etc., CDs, etc., etc. have had an effect on music radio in general? Wow...cha-cha-changes, indeed.

Any network stuff will probably be limited to overnights and weekends on The Fan, showing Fox Sports Radio the door. Which would mean FSR would now be persona non grata in Cleveland, since KNR/KNR2 are commited to ESPN, and no other station would fit.

"Kiley and Booms" and "Bull and Fox" maybe made avalible for regional syndication (such as to Toledo and/or Youngstown) when those Cumulus owned stations flip from ESPN to CBS.

Maybe Clear Channel sees the opportunity to flip WMMS to that mancave/sports hybrid station people always talk about. That, or maybe stick it on a translator or two.

Ain't gonna happen. MMS is already a mancave station with their rock/talk/sports mix. Any other sports MMS gets would be PBP (maybe more Tribe games, or perhaps having WTAM slide over some Notre Dame football games) or maybe (maybe) Jim Rome.

But a full affiation...negatory.

Exactly. CC has absolutely no need to turn WMMS into a sports talker, FSR or no. It is successful just the way it is.

I also see no need to put Jim Rome on 100.7, no matter how many people on these boards think it's a good idea. The ONLY way that happens is if CC corporate/Premiere feels the need to do so if 'KNR eventually dumps Romey, and even that's not a certainty.

Again, "I could be wrong". :)

You can listen on 1350 AM to Fox sports Radio

Outside of the Aeros and Zips, 1350 is FSR 24/7 (been so since 8/26/11 when Ken Carmen moved to The Fan).

Ken was no longer with 1350 for a time before he joined 92.3. The show ended a ways before August.

He was, though, part of the Akron Aeros broadcast team until not long before his debut on The Fan.

Though I was wrong about the exact day, WARF became 24/7 FSR once Carmen did leave.

For a spell he was the only local show on 1350, and when he was off or had to go on the road with the Aeros, FSR's "Loose Cannons" aired in his place.

Something to ponder...

With KNR and The Fan around, would CC try to put a local show on 1350 to compete?

Yes 1350 is an Akron station, but sports-wise Akron is pretty much an extension of Cleveland (with a bit more interest in U of Akron/Kent State).

I wouldn't be surprised to see 1350 take another run at a local show, though probably not right away.

I'm just not sure who would do it.

They could use an AMD show, as FSR's morning show is awful.

Dan Patrick and Jim Rome are fine in middays

Maybe a PMD show as well.

CC ain't gonna send guys like Andre Knott or Nick Camino down there, that's for sure.

You can hear Fox Sports Radio on line anytime you like, or on an Android or iPhone with the Fox Sports App..

Wondering if CBS and NBC will take a page from the ESPN Playbook and do customized websites for major markets..from the looks of things, ESPN makes some money from the NYC site..

FSR is running what in AMD now, Cincinnati's Andy Furman and some other guy?

And I agree with that last statement. If 1350 adds a local show again, it'll be the function of someone else already being there in some other job. Jon Marochino was a swing jock for WKDD and was already doing stuff like afternoon traffic reports. Ken Carman was already doing other stuff (producing, reporting, etc., plus Aeros work).

They aren't gonna hire a new host from outside.

Heard an ad on the station for a new local show.
I think it's going to be Zips analyst Joe Dunn hosting.

Time slot?

And is it a general local sports show, or one of 1350's Zips-related shows?

going from memory here---but I'm pretty sure it's M-F, 3-6...local sports.
I heard the ads during Rome. I think the start is next month.
