I know this is a radio board however, I was just wondering about a couple of things concerning Channel 2. I want to know what others think.
First, Brad in the daily fish wrap out of Nashville reported that Channel 2 was not renewing Victoria Hansons contract. I say big mistake 5 or 4 or even 17 should jump at the chance to sign her.
Secondly, does this VJ thing bother any one else. In these days of downsizing, it appears this is the route WKRN must be taking. Either the reports will have great photography and a less than wonderful voice over or a great voice over and lacking in the photography side. It just don't seem right

I'd love to hear their rationale in not renewing Victoria's contract:
and as for the VJ thing...if they want to become a Bowling Green caliber
operation, that's a great first step. WKRN now has the on-air feel
of a starter/training operation. Pretty sad for what was once a good TV
market (think about the caliber ch 4 used to be).<P ID="signature">______________

They've pretty much been a training operation for as long as I've been living.

And the ratings can justify:

Channel 4 is #1 on 5:00 pm, 6:00pm, and on the weekends

Channel 5 is #1 on 10:00 pm, and on the Mornings

FOX 17 gets a 9:00 pm win with no competition.

Hansen has just become the Katie Couric of Nashville and I wouldn't be

surprise she goes to Channel 5 to replace Amy Marsailis

as the new co-anchor for for the station and help get people comfortable

for Rhori Johnson once Clark retires next year.

But will someone from the 3rd place station in town be a boost to the first-place late newscast (5)? There's really no spot for her at 4 or 17, unless they give her a reporting franchise. All their anchor slots are taken.

Channel 2 has had some good reporters over the years--Jay Korff, Lilla Marigza, Chris Bundgaard, Nancy Hauskins and Melissa Penry come to mind. Some of them are still there. And their anchors--Bob, Anne, Neil, Heather and Allison are solid. They've put out a quality product, even during the last news director's reign of terror.

One thing to keep in mind--Channel 2 has two "competitors" that are not in this market: One is Channel 13 in Bowling Green and the other is Channel 7 in Jackson. Those two cut into Channel 2's audience in a way that Channels 4 and 5 don't have to worry about.

As always, the Evangelist has some great input and displays is wares of great news knowledge that are equaled by few in this market.

Channel 2 has the top two anchors in this market and the best weather person. I even think they have the best lead sports person.

Bob and Ann are the best anchors in town.

With Channel 5 losing Mark Howard (horrible, but a 20 year face in the market) Clark and Amy, they are going to have a total new face. Add in Mr. Happy hands as the #2 sports guy and a new 3rd face in sports, they will open the door for someone to cut into their numbers. Hope makes so many mistakes that no one really wants to watch him. Rhori Johnson is a disaster waiting to happen. He is not lead anchor material.

Channel 4, what can you say. They are solid with their anchors because they have just been here so long, but they lost Hall on weather and now have Miss "crisis" alert when a 20 mph wind comes close to town. All their back up faces are mostly new and not really familiar. They have a rotating door on weather and sports and no one really knows who is the sports person there. Rudy is Snowbird and Steve and Aaron are probably the #2 and #3 sports TV guys in town.

Channel 17 has good anchors and a good face on sports. The weather guy is great of course and a well known Nashville face.

I like channel 2 and they have a chance to make hay, and in these days of cost cutting, you might see their VJ's work, maybe not for those of us who know what it should be, but for the average Joe, they might not care as much.

We certainly don't have anyone crying over the downsizing of radio news we had in the last 20 years, but then again it might be something they lost that they never really realized it was gone...

Let's face it, the internet is where most are going now.... tis sad because the radio news was once the fastest form of news for the general public. TV second, and the money has gotten in the way.

Two words: Non-compete. Okay, maybe that's just one word and it's hyphenated, but still.<P ID="signature">______________

It would depend on the contract wording. Perhaps there is a non-compete clause
for six months to a year (such as Carl P. Mayfield before and after WSIX), or a termination clause based on any valid reason (insubordination, morals, etc.) or Ms. Hansen reached contract expiration and she is a free agent. Likely her agent or attorney has these possibilities covered. My guess is she is free to pursue a job in any market, including Nashville, based on contract expiration and non-renewal on the station's part. If we hear something different I am sure it will be posted here.

I'm thinking that if Channel 5 goes in-house for a 10 pm co-anchor, they might consider Kristin Priesol. She is very good at what she does. And if they were to do that, perhaps Victoria could be part of 5's morning show.

I'm waiting for one of the stations here to revert to having a solo anchor for the 10 pm show. It's still done in many markets. I wonder if 2 or 5 is considering that possibility.
