WKRP - DID IT EVER EXIST?

I have often wondered was there an actual radio station in Cincinnati that had those call letters?

WKRP in Cincinnati was a great show and being an owner of a radio station, I know first hand, there is a lot of reality in the program.

There was,I believe,a station in Dallas Georgia called WKRP

I believe there is a low-power TV station in the Cincy area with those calls.

Weren't those calls somewhere in southeastern Indiana at one time? Just guessing, but wasn't it North Vernon?

To my knowledge there never was a WKRP in Cincinnati. However, there is a WKRC and a WKRQ... It is widely rumored the station in the TV show was inspired by the real WKRQ.

Right now the calls are on a dark LPTV in Cookeville, Tennessee.

Yes...WKRP was on 1460 in North Vernon,IN. My understanding is that they were paying someone a licensing fee for using those copyrighted call letters and when the station was sold, the new owners didn't see the value in that arrangement. Not sure I would have either.

That is a legitimate call sign. There's no way they could, or should have been able to, copyright them. Whoever paid the license fee needs to demand his money back.

The wiki article explains the production company tried to block the station in Dallas, Georgia from using those call letters citing what they considered ownership. The FCC explained call letters could not be copyrighted.

And Casey P. wrote one of the WKRP scripts, the episode where Johnny misreads the 50 dollar prize as 5 thousand dollars. Surprisingly, a half of a Datsun wasn't included.
