My understanding is that they were paying someone a licensing fee for using those copyrighted call letters and when the station was sold, the new owners didn't see the value in that arrangement. That is a legitimate call sign. There's no way they could, or should have been able to, copyright them. Whoever paid the license fee needs to demand his money back.
