WKRP on DVD...bad news.

And to top it all off, there are syndicated episodes of the show as well in the mix in addition with nearly all of the songs going bye bye with it.

Oh well, at least I have the Pilot episode of WKRP shown in 2 parts that was sold on VHS by MTM Video back in the late 80's and early 90's that contained the complete episode plus the original music featured. Guess I need to look for some more VHS episodes of WKRP which include The Turkey Drop.

i will buy it. the shows are still funny!!

I have the pilot on VHS and would like to find Turkeys Away on VHS as well, but haven't been able to. In an earlier thread I asked if it was available on VHS but got no response. So I assume it doesn't exist.

I wonder in a way if Fox is doing this just to see what kind of demand there is for this show.
So many other movies and TV shows in the past have been released to good sales numbers - only to have "special editions" released later at a higher price.

Maybe they're looking to see if there's the kind of demand to warrant releasing a $200 a season version of the show. (which is what I hear it would cost to leave all the original music in)

It was my understanding that the show's creator, Hugh Wilson, was a part of the decision-making process involved in putting the DVD together.

I had heard that he was "satisfied" with the decisions made concerning the music, but it sounded as if it were simply a compromise. I don't think he, MTM, or Fox had ever anticipated that the home video market was going to explode like it did, and thus create a demand for the series. More than that, the costs of music licensing have gone from bad to worse in the last decade. It's one thing to include an intact episode on a VHS tape, but as soon as you say DVD, BOOM...the prices go through the roof. I don't know why.

This episode(Turkeys Away) does exist on VHS, it appeared on a WKRP VHS tape on MTM Video which featured holiday episodes of shows.

In the late 80's and early 90's, a lot of the MTM library came to home video with pilot episodes of Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, Newhart, WKRP, Rhoda, Phyllis, Hill Street Blues, The White Shadow, Remington Steele, and St. Elsewhere as well as selected episodes of each show on different VHS tapes put out by MTM Video.

The other day I found a bunch of these shows all except WKRP, Phyllis, and Hill Street Blues at a Salvation Army store in San Antonio, many of the tapes weren't even open. I paid 49 cents apiece for them. So basically if you can, you can check out thrift stores or pawn shops that still sell VHS tapes or check on EBAY(the last time I checked they didn't have any tapes of WKRP available.)

ugh.

Original music, or nothing. I hate to see chop shop things like this, and people who don't know any better buying them.

I would gladly pony up $200 for the real thing. This show is worth it.

I take that back about EBAY not having WKRP on VHS, I had put in WKRP In Cincinatti instead of just WKRP and they have several videos(Turkeys Away is not in any of them for sale) but they have a 3 VHS boxed set which contain 6 episodes of the show including the pilot which sells from $50 to $150.

I found DVD copies of the original episodes online and my wife ordered them for me for Christmas but it was a horror story. The seller was offshore and it took forever for them to get here. When they did get here the quality was terrible, like an old VHS copy and the DVDs were burned on a computer. I reported them as scammers because they had tons of other complaints as well and they never answered their phone or emails. I can't even find the seller anymore so they must have crawled back to where they came from.

At least I got 'em and they have the original music.

I think the music replacement began in the late-1990s, when the MTM library was owned by International Family Entertainment ("Family"), which was owned by Pat Robertson (of "700 Club" fame (or infamy)) and also included The Family Channel (now ABC Family) -- unwilling to pay the already-expensive fees for music licensing, Family replaced a great deal of the music with their own music. When Fox acquired the MTM library, they distributed the Family version of WKRP to TV stations, including Nick-at-Nite.

And unfortunately, it's apparent that they used the Family WKRP as the source of the DVD set, even though the press release promised a new improved version with most of the original tunes intact and better replacement music.

My wife ordered a DVD copy for me about a year ago and it has all the original music. It is a copy dubbed from vhs so the quality is not digital remaster, but hey I still laugh my butt off watching it over and over.

I found some WKRP episodes including the turkey drop one on a website called Guba.com. They are bootleg recorded off the air. They can be steamed or downloaded to an IPOD or in the divix format. You'll have to download the plugin from divix.com if you want to watch them that way. Some DVD authoring programs will accept divix files. The quality is OK. these aren't the original CBS versions but and I'm not sure what parts are missing since I haven't seen the uncut versions since they ran back in the 70's, but a lot of original tunes are still on them. I'm sure they will take them off the site as soon as the lawyers find out. There is also some old Dark Shadows and Flying Nun shows on it too.

Disclaimer: This is not an endorsement to download illegal bootleg video from the internet. I'm just letting you know for your information.

Sad news, it was a great show.

Too bad the DVD is destroyed by lawyers and copyrights.

Any pirate copies out there?

Since pirate copies are being brought up, I've noticed that over the last few days there has been a banner ad on the Classic TV page for a site that sells bootleg DVDs of shows including WKRP. Is running an ad for something like that legal?

Guys? What retail outlet can I walk into and buy WKRP on DVD?

I don't think any retail stores are carrying it yet, Chris. I think the mail-order houses like Amazon.com and the like are all that's carrying it yet.
