WKRP on DVD

I know this is an Indiana board, but I know some of my radio co horts would LOVE to see this happen.

News that Fox is releasing WKRP in Cincinnati is making the rounds thanks to a flyer that can be found inside the upcoming release of 'Stacked'. The studio has been working on the set for quite a while, spending most of their time looking at the songs used in the series. As you've probably guessed, there will be music substitutions when the set comes out, but the studio has been spending a lot of time with a music supervisor to ensure that the replaced songs fit the show. Hugh Wilson, creator of the series, has heard some of the replaced music and thought Fox did a good job.

This series was one that Fox said would NEVER be released on DVD because of the music, but they are looking at April, 2007 for the first season set. Hopefully fans will keep an open mind and consider purchasing this set even with some of the music being replaced. More info forthcoming....
 
To see Les Nesman pulling on that Mike Brady wig as he got ready for his date w/ Jennifer to "Hot Blooded" still makes me laugh out loud. Hope that one got saved. If not I'd still by it. I wonder how many of us were inspired to go into radio because of this show?

I was in radio when WKRP was on, and the similarities were spooky. From the sales guy who was Herb Tarlek, to the cool PD. The AM was automated and named Loni, with the poster along side.

How many PD's and jock wanted to change formats like Andy told Johnny to do in the pilot??

I was in radio as well when the show was on and they got a lot of things right about the business. It was almost as if they had a "consultant" of some sort. One thing that wasn't right was when a scene was done in the control room, the jock would turn the monitor all the way down. I guess that was to either save on music fees or so that you could concentrate on what was being said. Anyway, that's minor and it was amusing rather than annoying. If the DVD does indeed have the original music, it'll be a real treasure! Les Nessman is my hero!

That show made me want to go into radio. It will be a must buy if they keep the original music or not!

I think so...I believe he worked out of Atlanta and based some of the show on the agency's dealings with a radio station.
 
I always gave them props for dealing with the Who concert disaster, since KRP was a Cincy rock station. Not exactly the stuff of a feel-good episode, but it made sense. Hard sell to the network, I'm sure. A brave move.
 
I too was in the DJ/production side of radio when WKRP was on. Great show. Often while the main dialogue was taking place in the control room, you could hear a commercial playing in the background. Once when the PD and Johnny Fever were talking there was a spot for a nursing home playing in the background. Opening line of the spot was, "Have you ever asked yourself the question, 'What happens when I can no longer feed myself?'" I really wanted to use that line in a spec spot for a nursing home but chickened out.

Yes and no -- Yes, it will have original music;and No, there will be some songs that Fox was unable to clear, and this is where the replaceemnt songs go into play. But this time around, it won't be as blatant or annoying as on the Nick-at-Nite showings.

And the episode when a group of Japanese businessmen is going on a tour of the station and their interpreter is translating English into Spanish! Or when Johnny Fever introduces the song "You're Having My Baby" sung, not by Paul Anka, but by the Hallelujah Tabernacle Choir. And it's an actual choir that's singing the song.
 
I'll simply be taking the "official" set and replacing the audio where necessary with the track from the "unofficial" 18 DVD set (sourced from VHS recordings of WGN's mid eighties syndie run of the show).

Can't speak for the 12 dvd set at the link above, but have heard the quality is not good. The 18 dvd set floating around, while not perfect, is quite watchable.
 
Remember the episode where Herb dreams (nightmare?) his job is to show up at the station and sit next to a computer. He's the only employee because everyone has been automated out... Does that ring a Clear Channel bell?

Anyhow, if the show was real life, where do you think those people would be today?

Here's my take...
Mr Carlson would be living in Florida on a golf course. Mother Carlson checked out ten years ago. Johnny would be working at a surf shack in southern California, Herb, selling insulation, Bailey, in an ad agency and Les, underseceratary of Agriculture. Venus would be doing nights on a smooth jazz station and nobody really know where Jennifer went. Rumors are, she married a wealthy baron and lives in Europe.

Wasn't that the episode with WKRP's take on A Christmas Carol, where Carlson cuts the bonuses? Jennifer was the Ghost of Christmas Past, Venus was Christmas Present, and Johnny Fever was Christmas Future.
