WKRP "Turkeys Away" notes

Happy Thank...s...giving...from...W...K...R...P!-Les Nessman
A few notes on "WKRP"'s most famous episode:
On the DVD version, the scene with Johnny and Mr. Carlson in the booth is HEAVILY edited on the DVD set. Hopefully you taped the show when it ran on E! in the 90s or TNN in the early 2000s...the scene in the E! and TNN versions remained intact, with the Pink Floyd tune "Dogs" playing underneath the scene. Also, on the DVD commentary, series creator Hugh Wilson incorrectly states that the song being played in the original, unedited episode is "Pigs On The Wing"...there IS a joke in the scene about "Pigs" but it's "Dogs" that is played.
I know that Fox CLAIMED that they "Couldn't afford" to pay the royalties on any of the music from the original 'KRP episodes, which is exactly why "WKRP" seasons 2, 3, and 4 will never see the light of day on DVD. I know a lot of 'KRP fans rejected the DVD release because of the syndicated version of episodes and the deletion of original music and addition of generic sound-alikes. It makes no sense that in other series, for example, "The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air", most songs were at least kept intact(Soul II Soul's "Back To Life" in the Pilot comes to mind). Good thing I taped the series in syndication, although the versions that aired on E! sometimes included scenes that were cut from the TNN version.
One last note...in the episode "Mama's Review"(The first ep on Disc 2), during the format flip scene, Ted Nugent's "Queen of the Forest" can be heard underneath the scene on the DVD. Looks like one of the editors missed that one. Oops!

Well, Alans -

The WKRP series first season on DVD was a big seller. And the owners of the copyrights on the music used in the series just might look at that as a way to "cash in", by seriously inflating the usage rights of the music on the DVD's. And, yes, it can make it prohibitively expensive to release.

But, all of that, though...comes out in the wash of further negotiations. I'd love to see more come out on DVD, just as you do. It was a great show...people outside the industry don't realize how close to "real life" in some stations WKRP really was...

WKRP....let it go for cryin' outloud. Yall know that wasnt really a station right ::)

'KRP is one of my all-time favorite series, so "letting it go" isn't in the cards. Now, the "New" WKRP from the early 90s, THAT one I can definitely let go!

If it sold well, then i'm shocked that the rest of the series hasn't been released on DVD yet. I do agree with Loni Anderson on one of the DVD commentary tracks that the music "was like the third star of the show".
According to the book "America's Favorite Radio Station" by Michael B. Kassell, 'KRP was mostly based on 790 WQXI out of Atlanta, where Hugh Wilson worked in sales and the Johnny Fever character was inspired by "Skinny" Bobby Harper.

Tell that to someone who works in broadcasting, and you'll be run out of town on a rail. If you don't like the discussion, you are free to go onto the next one.

One way to solve this problem is to look for copies of the syndicated version on eBay.
I already solved that problem...I taped the entire series TWICE...once on E! in 1996 and once on TNN in late 2000/early 2001. Believe it or not, both syndicated versions that ran included different scenes that were cut from the other versions(A scene may have been included on the E! version but not on the TNN version).
I'm guessing the reason that Seasons 2-4 haven't been released is due to the editing out of music...i'm sure it's an arduous task. 'KRP IS missing something minus the original music, though...at least the syndicated versions kept most of the actual music intact. :)

You should convert your old tapes to DVD and charge people for copies! I bet you could make a few bucks out of it, I know I'd be in line.

There were some songs they had no other choice but to purchase the rights. The "Real Families" episode had Steely Dan music throughout the background. It was to the point the entire dialog would had to have been replaced, thus truly trashing the episode.

One of my favorite, now dated, lines came from Herb in the remote episode. As he leaves the store at the start of the remote Herb says, "Del, goshdarnit I've got to go, but if you need anything, anything at all, I'll be in my car somewhere.". That quote comes to mind every time a "Herb Tarlek like" account exec leaves a remote early.

Of course we know it wasn't a real station, no respect. Just too close to one, assuming you ever worked in a station...
