WKSE at its best

KISS is one of the stations I grew up on... has had some strong people pass through those doors.

My favorite lineup (correct me if I get this wrong... had to be like late 80's or so?)

Mornings - Rocky Allen
Middays - Janet Snyder
Afternoons - Mike McGowan
Nights - Kid Crockett (Kelly)
Latenights - Mark "the shark" Richards
Overnights - Donny Walker

My memory is real hazy and I wasn't here the entire time, but I'm not sure all of those folks were at WKSE at the same time. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

So, Mr. Pendola...what are you up to these days? In radio? Out of radio? In San Francisco? Somewhere else? Fill us in.

Rocco Pendola, child sports prodigy, WGR Newsradio 55, the Chuck Finney years. Welcome to the board. If Craig Carton can get a gig in NYC, you should be able to get one in LA.

right. but do i want one? i got back and forth on that. radio is not what it once was, although I streamed WHTT yesterday midday, closed my eyes, and heard a booming, yet conversational voice. that was nice!

carton doing mornings in New York City. wow.

thanks for the clarification TVJunkie12...

surprised no one is chiming in on the whereabouts of the great Steve Brodie. Someone must know.

Hmmm...I guess it wasn't until 1990 that Mark was doing evenings then...?
I could have sworn there was a time there when it was Mark Richards on evenings while The "real Mike Steel" was doing the same timeslot on Magic 102 back in the day...

How cool!

It's nice to be remembered....... I was at KISS from 1984 (still rxt at the time) until May of 1992. It was a great time in my life and wouldn't change it for anything. I especially miss the Saturday Night Kiss Mix!

I am currently doing mornings at STAR 99.9 in Bridgeport Ct. STAR999.COM.

I'm currently working on editing the huge box of airchecks that I have from this time period. If anyone would like an mp3 or two drop me a line.

Mike McGowan

P.S. Marc the Shark is doing mornings at wlzw in Utica N.Y. He's expecting a child
with his bride Tammy any day now...

I just remember the lineup around 1989-91. I may have some of the timing wrong on this as well by a year +/-.

Mornings-Sam Malone (he may have been closer to late 1990 or early 1991)
Middays-Kim Wild (Beth Ann McBride)
Afternoons-Mike McGowan
Evenings-Smokin' Willie B.
Late Nights-Mark Richards
Overnights-Donny Walker

Mike McGowan

The great Mike McGowan! Great stuff. Those were the days. For better or worse you were partially responsible for getting me into radio! Those radio days are gone. Smokin' Willie B! The Saturday Night Kiss Mix!! I remember that.

Anyway, I would love an MP3 of you and the Kidster if possible!!

Wow what memories. I was just a teen during the days of malone and walker and mcgowan. I do have to say I am a big fan of Doc Reno who did pm drive around 1995 or so. He had a smokin pm drive show. I remember the banter between walker and reno, classic radio.

Chiming in:

1989, or so, I was 14...or so.
To me, this was thee best in radio! Before I discovered
energy/am640,(or bigger markets) WKSE-FM, was first, and that "era"
frozen in time, was theeee best! I would listen to some
southern ontario stations, but WKSE (1988-199?)/early 90s was...
IT.
hands down, the best... I admired majic102, from a distant, for
the occassional, "whacky" stunt ( 'fake commercials) such as
the freddy-kruegger mellancamp, or the tune into 'kiss' ...we will wait,
(tick, tick) while they play commercials, we play music....

But, it wasnt about the music...I mean, yes there were some classics,
on the airwaves, and premiered on the fri/sat night kiss mix shows...
the very first time, i heard "one song" with, three music [non-stop]artists mixed
all into one...

I started to get inspired, attempted to use a boombox to create airchecks
(after the "famous" radio people I lived, breathed and tuned into, daily)...
My passion driven me to (try)to re-create the remixes I heard on
McGowan's sat. nite kiss-mix, ( far cry from the great, Dj-Donnie G)?...
(PS: mike, McGowan, went to his auto shop not too long ago, he says hey).

Hearing the top of the hour IDs, the bed check radio program, i tried to
re-Produce that, and i believe in my heart, that is why im soo nutz! about
production...today! the best of the best, in radio....

(mark richards, smokin willie b, mike mcgowan, jj Wright)......
were my fave. four!!!! [i unfortunately, didnt hear much of kid-Crockett],
because at that time, esp. in the summer, was at the beach near
our house...and recall, just making it home, in time for the kiss/10 at 10...
so, i only have my friend's air checks to listen too (now), but WOW
he was amazing!

i have searched for smokin willie b(?went to philly)?/and attempted to
locate jj-Wright, without success...partially, the name JJ Wright,
is just a little too common...

I also, recall, a "hottt" dj-anthony, on the overnites, along with
an early sounding donnie walker..doing classic radio banter with
mark richards( "look out streets, here i come")

-Classic, Top Notch Radio.

the "dot-com" kids of today...listen to the Pro's , and take it with
you next time you sign on the aire.....

harry Leg/skyy

Even though I never heard him, "Live"
harry leg, and skyywalker were amazing
on the aire here, (via mp3 files-airchecks) is
what I'm basing this on...it was incredible
to have such top notch Talent grace
the air waves on "lil' ol-wkse"....

695 delaware, second barn on your left,
(all criticism aside) had some AMAZING...
shows, talents..... ((dam suits))...

take pickle's Post-Modern Sunday...
the bed-check, or, just the sound
and location of the remotes...
.........wow, its just soo different
from what it is today, and that is not
all the "business" / just lack of ....
well, those, and the think tank to be creative
or at least trying to be different than
playing the same ol ' 11-song kiss a thon'

(this doesnt even tap into...the legendary
kiss,summer hello parties; kiss-mix bash,
or...some of the better car give away's )

(1988: cool cash, hot cars, wkse)

Rocco....................................u
reeeeeely struck a cord : )

7:40 "battle of the new songs"

(this was truely amazing, 'pre'Internet) it was
IMPRESSIVE when a station serving market number
(were we 50 back then) was ACTUALLY the first
to play the new "record" from new bands/groups, or
the established artists....that songs that were later
in the career, that maybe did not do as well as other
hits....but, thanks to the battle of the new songs/WKSE,
you (the listener) knew salt-n-pepa's new one "shake it up baby"
(for example) 'could be a hit' ....

-it also seemed alot more acceptable for a song
(say, "Parents...understand") by Dj-Jazzy jeff/fresh prince
to have ALOT more staying POWER on the kiss 10/10 ,
versus today!!!

Radio_bored-Op,

I don't know where smokin' willy b
is workin'...but there's a poster by that
name that posts (once in awhile) on the
allaccess.com board in the nettalk section.

so, u might try 'n track him down over there.

apparently, he's a MAJOR MARKET kinda DUDE
judging from his posts.  could be your man!

i never knew harry legg worked at WKSE.
when was he there?

Yes! the battle of the new songs! good stuff. and the kiss 10 at 10!

anyone with airchecks of KISS from that era, email me. i gotta hear them now.

i, too, was 14 in 1989 and man KISS was the shit. no doubt.

another solid jock from around that time: Tarzan Dan, jammin' in the jungle, on ALL-HIT 680 CFTR!!!!

I think he does mornings now in a smaller Canadian market than Toronto.

I could go on all day and all night about radio in the mid-to-late 80s/early 90s.... so I will stop.

Then I got knee deep in the biz and it went to hell!!
