You forgot about WXVW 1450 but I think the last thing we need is another sports station around here.Isn't five sports stations enough already?
And forget about the WKSR call letters. WKSR is on 1420 AM in Pulaski Tennessee and WKSR FM is at 106.7 in Lawrenceburg Tennessee.
I agree... we're definitely over saturated with sports stations here, and there always seems to be the suggestion that we need more. But I personally think even the addition of WLCL to the mix was over the top. I know that there are plenty of other angles to put on sports, programs that are unrepresented here, events not broadcast here, and entire networks that don't exist here... but if they did exist, would they have an audience? We're a market that completely lacks any major professional sports teams that we can call our own, and the most we have to show for fanatics around here are fans of two college teams... except unlike professional sports, which is practically a big deal year round, college sports (at least the ones people care about) thrive just a few months out of the year. And that window is even shorter for many UK fans, as they focus right on the basketball season and don't even care so much about the football season.
I don't doubt the fact that KSR probably does well in the realm of sports (exact numbers can't be published, of course), but Dave Ramsey and Hannity probably do about as well as WKJK could ever hope for as far as nationally syndicated programming is concerned. As awful and obnoxious as I personally think both programs are, I don't think there are any syndicated sports talk shows out there that could be a ratings improvement over Ramsey and Hannity (at least not in this market), and of course they could go with more locally based stuff, but that would cost money... and let's face it, if they're not interested in keeping a local program on in the evening at WHAS (the one AM they really do care about), they're not going to do it here either. Maybe the better move would be for WKRD to drop the UofL-leaning perspective (as well some of the nationally syndicated stuff) and become a stronger locally based sports station, with the UK stuff thrown into the mix as well. Granted, that suggestion doesn't help WKJK, but look at WKRD, their off-season ratings are usually sort of in the dumps too (essentially losing half of their audience in the spring and summer, just like WKJK). Maybe if they had one REALLY good local strong sports station, they could get some traction.
In any event, I think WKJK (and WKRD for that matter) is just dead weight that iHeartMedia would really, really like to find some way to dump off. They've got their hands full with AM stations that they gobbled up when they thought AM had a strong future that are simply beyond hope, and WKJK is just one of many...
