I met John Hall in October of '93 when he was running The Record Hive inside the Marketplace in Springfield. TOTAL class act and one heck of a nice guy! He was the first air personality/jock I ever met. I talked his ear off that day. John had a great, very distinct voice as well. He's definitely in my Top 10 all-time favorite air personalities of all-time. I remember him on WIZE, and later WAZU(Pre-Big WAZU days)in the mid 80s, and later WLW. I believe he also was on WBNS-FM in their Oldies days as well. I never listened to 101.7 when he launched it...I wish i'd have known he was on there and I would've tuned in. I was saddened to hear of his passing in 2004. I was enlightened to hear that the WIZE/WULM studios in Springfield were dedicated to him a few years back. Is he in the Dayton Broadcasters' Hall of Fame? If not, he should be inducted stat.Limp73 said:I remember passing by that Urbana tower on Dugan Rd. a number of years ago on several occasions when driving to Marysville or northern Columbus.
Whether the tower site gets sold or whatever it's still going to leave a huge void in Urbana and Springfield....a loss which hopefully may get the ball rolling for some sort of live local radio presence in Clark and Champaign counties once again...either in the form of an LPFM with audiostreaming or an internet-only service similar to Scores Broadcast.com.
Jim Bissey managed (and I think helped start-up) that station in the 60s (as WCOM) John Hall helped re-invent it in the 80s with the callsign/ownership change to the present WKSW....but the least Mainline could have possibly done is keep its studio in Springfield.
Though the new format seems to be off to a successful running start,I am a bit disappointed.
