WKTI and KZIO Airchecks from 1983

Still learning the ins and outs of the YouTube game. The WKTI 1983 aircheck of Brian Mitchell was blocked because Warner Brothers apparently objected to a Prince song in there. I will re-edit and repost in the near future, I believe it is quite an enjoyable aircheck of some overnight automated programming.

I have quite a few airchecks of WLUM, WBTT, WZUU and WKTI from the early to mid-80s and hope to post these soon, hopefully in ways that Warner Brothers will not object to.

Meanwhile, enjoy defunct top 40 KZIO Duluth from the summer of 83!

Alright looks like I finally got my first Brian Mitchell aircheck from 1983 on WKTI through the YouTube filters. Hold your breath! I had to delete two Warner Music Group songs - Delirious by Prince and Take it to the Limit by the Eagles. So 2 songs from the actual playlist are missing. This was taped on an early Monday morning between 3 and 5 AM. WKTI ran public affairs programs after midnight on Sundays and then pre-taped Mitchell until Reitmann and Mueller. I have a couple more hours of airchecks of this programming.

Sorry, the quality of the source tape wasn't good for the WLUM one in particular.

More to come in future weeks, but I am tired and going to take a break now!

Scholarm,

Thanks so much for posting these. Brings back memories. Hot 102 was really inventive for their time. An R&B leaning station in the mid 80s that was NOT afraid to think outside the box and add a hit even if it did not fit their format. Great example was Pet Shop Boys and Cyndi Lauper. This is awesome!

VERY good stuff. I was born in 1985 and Hot 102 was my favorite station during the early 90s....I wish I was old enough back then to appreciate how good that station was. Even though V100 got the best of them, I don't think it has ever been as good as Hot 102 was.

BTW, I have a tape that me and my brother recorded from Hot 102 during the summer of 1993....commercials and all....promos for Kris Kross at the Wisconsin State Fair, Dr. Dre's Chronic Tour coming to "The Mecca" (which is now the US Cellular Arena) featuring Snoop Doggy Dogg, Run DMC, Bo$$ and The Geto Boys....I wish I knew how to upload it.

My thanks go out too. I guess that was the way radio sounded back in the 80s. Sounds really lame compared to now. I too was born in the 80s so when those stations were there I wasn't old enough to remember them. Scholar, do you have full versions of these unscoped?

hot 102 was one of the best radio station I hated it when then changed the format to new rock 102.1 too bad I was in high school I would have changed it back too hot 102.1 but ever since kiss came on the air I'm not going too bother with it any more I also think they should of done it write away but now days I like that rythem station in madison wjqm deforest madison 93.1 jams v 100 ok but I think v 100 could be a little bit better kiss in milwaukee is really good too

Glad people are enjoying the WLUM airchecks from the 80s. Yes, it was a very cool station! I have several more WLUM airchecks that I plan to post in the coming weeks.

There is a thread about the history of WLUM on the Urban board:

I do have unscoped versions of all of the airchecks, I will look into whether it would be possible to post these on a file exchange site in the future.

I did post a few more non-WLUM airchecks from the 1980s today:

I don't think V100 would have ever beat WLUM (much less force them to switch formats) if it wasn't for the WLUM ban on rap songs as a response to a high school shooting. As soon as they went that route I knew the end was near.

icy, you might think radio sounded lame back then but I would be surprised if anyone 25 years from now would be that interested or have much affection for 2010 era radio the way some of us do today for the 80s.
