WKTP downgrade..

What's with Holston valley dropping 1590 in Jonesborough from 5kw day and night to 1.8k D and flea power at night? Did they sell off land or are the towers in that bad a shape and too costly to replace? Maybe they could sell it to someone and operate as a Jonesborough station again. With that power and @ 1590 you aren't going to have much of a signal.

REASON FOR STA

JUSTIFICATION 01/18/2011:

A TOWER RELATED TO NON-BROADCAST RADIO USES HAS STOOD NEAR THE WKTP TRANSMITTER SITE FOR SOME TIME. THE OWNER OF THAT TOWER DESIRES TO ATTACH ADDITIONAL RADIO EQUIPMENT TO SAID TOWER AND TOOK MEASUREMENTS OF THE PERFORMANCE OF THE WKTP FOUR-TOWER DIRECTIONAL SYSTEM. THESE MEASUREMENTS SHOWED THAT THE DIRECTIONAL SYSTEM IS NOT PERFORMING ON AT LEAST ONE RADIAL AS CALLED FOR IN THE WKTP STATION LICENSE. HOLSTON VALLEY PERSONNEL, WHO PRIOR TO THAT TIME HAD VERIFIED THAT WKTP HAD BEEN OPERATING WITHIN LICENSED PARAMETERS, HAVE VERIFIED THE FINDINGS OF THE NON-BROADCAST TOWER OWNER.

IN ORDER TO ATTEMPT TO RESOLVE THIS, THE STATION HAS REDUCED ITS POWER TO 1.25 KILOWATTS, AND HAS DISCONTINUED THE USE OF ITS FOUR TOWER ARRAY, INSTEAD OPERATING NON-DIRECTIONALLY FROM TOWER #2 OF THE ARRAY (THIS IS THE REFERENCE TOWER OF THE ARRAY).

THEREFORE, HOLSTON VALLEY REQUESTS SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORITY TO OPERATE AT VARIANCE WITH LICENSED PARAMETERS. SPECIFICALLY, HOLSTON VALLEY SEEKS AUTHORITY THAT WKTP BE PERMITTED TO OPERATE WITH NON-DIRECTIONAL OPERATION, UTILIZING TOWER #2 OF ITS ARRAY, AT 25% OF LICENSED POWER.

From FCC application...Cows caused a problem with ground system

EXTENSION REQUEST 07/22/2011:

THE PROBLEMS AT OUR TRANSMITTER SITE HAVE NOT YET BEEN RESOLVED. IT IS RESPECTFULLY REQUESTED THAT WKTP BE PERMITTED TO CONTINUE ITS NON-DIRECTIONAL OPERATION AT 25% OF AUTHORIZED POWER. SINCE OUR INITIAL STA REQUEST, VARIOUS STORMS HAVE CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE WKTP TRANSMITTER BUILDING. ADDITIONALLY, CATTLE FROM NEIGHBORING LAND BROKE THROUGH A FENCE AND TRAMPLED TRANSMISSION LINES. THE STATION NEEDS TO HAVE CONTINUED AUTHORITY TO OPERATE AT LOW POWER WHILE THESE ISSUES ARE RESOLVED.

IT IS SUBMITTED THAT THE PUBLIC INTEREST, CONVENIENCE AND NECESSITY WOULD BE WELL SERVED BY A GRANT OF THE EXTENSION OF SAID SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORIZATION.

The latest application filed for in Oct. states;

AT PRESENT, WKTP IS AUTHORIZED TO OPERATE WITH POWER OF 5 KILOWATTS, UNLIMITED HOURS, FROM A FOUR TOWER DIRECTIONAL ANTENNA SYSTEM. IN THIS APPLICATION, WKTP PROPOSES TO DOWNGRADE FROM A CLASS B AM STATION TO A CLASS D AM STATION, OPERATING NON-DIRECTIONALLY FROM TOWER #2 AT ITS PRESENT LICENSED SITE, WITH REDUCED POWER, 1.8 KILOWATTS DAY, 23 WATTS AT NIGHT.

THE RESULTING FACILITY WILL NOT PERMIT WKTP TO SERVE NEW MARKETS; AND, IN FACT, ITS DAYTIME CITY-GRADE CONTOUR WILL NOT ENCOMPASS ANY PART OF KINGSPORT, BRISTOL (TN) OR BRISTOL (VA).

THEREFORE, THIS APPLICATION DOES NOT IMPLICATE THE FCC'S MULTIPLE OWNERSHIP RULES, AS WKTP IS NOT SEEKING TO RELOCATE OR TO SERVE NEW MARKETS.

I guess they did not want to spend the money to make repairs.

But, they do have a translator. However, will the power on the translator need to be brought down? Because translators are not supposed to extend the coverage area of the station which it's relaying...correct?

Non-related, but in July 2010, I was passing thru Chadbourn, NC on a Tuesday night. I was surfing across the AM band and picked up a signal at 1590. I stopped at a gas station at the NC/SC state line and listened for a few minutes longer when I hear George DeVault's very recognizable voice saying "You are listening to the WKPT Radio Network"....it freaked me out. I listened in and out to between Loris, SC and North Myrtle Beach.

WKTP 1590 has a good signal into the East end of Greeneville and better the farther toward Jonesborough you go. The West end of town you lose it even in the car. In the old days when 1590 was WJSO, it had a good omnidirectional signal. Was not sure when HV bought the frequency whether or not they configured 1590 into a directional across JC because many times I would lose the signal by the time I got to the Washington-Greene County line even in daytime.
